Just a word on trilineatus and julii and without casting any doubt on anyone's identification capabilities, unless the actual collecting site is known. i.e. the river from which the fish were caught it is impossible to state that the fish called C. julii are actually that species. The colour patterns of both species is variable with spotted and wavy streaked patterns showing up, the variability is probably more prominent in C. trilineatus.

Most if not all SA exporters purport to have C. julii and because none report where the fish have been collected from any true identification is impossible. I certainly would not put money on an id from pictures no matter how close to type they look.

That is where I got the info about the differences. I went to the one where he said he had both.

B) 8) ;)

At this point, I think unless you have a julii that everyone agrees on, it will always be a debate. So just get what you like and enjoy it.

I have some dwarf Syno petrocolas (S. lucipinnus). They are hard to breed, are somewhat rare, and rather recently got their classification more solidly. Everytime in the last year and a half that I have posted the pics in the Syno forum, I was told they were a hybrid monster from Chechoslovakia--very annoying. (That is the reason I get so testy when all that stuff comes up.)

So finally I took the most recent pics to PlanetCatfish, joined the forum, posted the pics and got an ID. I went back and related that on my TFF thread. More debating. I went back and posted again in PlanetCatfish. Got a solid ID from several members including one who was familiar with the source. I took that back and set the ID to rest at TFF. In the meantime, I managed to stir up a fuss over "aquarium strains" in PlanetCatfish.   A Yank extricated me, and I got out with my skin intact. I am inclined now to think that many Yanks are more tolerant of "aquarium strains" than Brits, but I may be way off on that. Should I start a thread in Chat? 8)
