I just switched my tank over to pool filter sand and am enjoying watching some of my fish play in it. I was wondering though, what are some species that are out there that will help me to turn over the sand. What species like to dig down and live in it, what species like move it around, and basically what species are enjoyable to watch play in it. Thanks for the help, leave stories if you have time.

fire eels.mine used to hide his entire body under the sand and just leave his head poking out lol

Cory Cats love to dig and play in the sand. They do not bury themselves in it though. They will bury their whole head into the sand when they dig.

as stated, cories like sand.

i feel bad for mine, little do they know they're gettin gravel soon.

most bottom dwellers would appreciate a sand substrate as it is more condusive to their natural river beds (which contain mostly silt)

Do Khulis, fire eels, spinny eels, horse faced loach, turn over lots of sand or do they just go under and stay in one place? I have a 125 gallon tank so I have a lot of sand to turn. I think my clown loaches will eat the MTS, isn't that right?

I don't know why, but my clown loaches don't seem to bother the mts. Every other snail is food.

I beleive i heard somewhere that mts have a harder shell than other snails, that may have something to do with it. And even if they do eat them, it may be a bonus they reproduce like madness!

I know the perfect fish for you. All fish in the Geophagus genus are called "Earth Eaters" These fish pick up sand in their mouth, then filter out the food in it. There are many different sized and colors of these fish. There's deffinatly a geophagus for you, it would be a perfect sand sifter. They are cichlids, so some may be more aggressive towards your fish. They arent as aggressive as most other cichlids though. Geophagus surinamensis is one example of a nice Earth eater.
