I currently have my adults in a 10 gallon that is heavily planted. I currently don't have a seperate tank for the offspring to grow out in. I usually give the babies away when they are big enough. However, I would like to have a place for them to grow until I give them away.

Just curious what everyone else uses for a nursery/growing tank--as far as size and such. What is a good setup?

Thanks!

Usually a 10gal is best for youngsters if you can afford that set up.

Bare bottom are best for fry as you can suck them up with the gravel vac.

You can also get away with having fine sand substrate if you stir it thoroughly up regualy with your hands and then do a water change afterwards once a week- its what i do with my fry tank and its been running like that fine for about 6months now.

Ok...how about this:

10 gallon with aqua clear or bio-wheel filter (I have a bio-wheel on my new 20 gallon and it is working quite nicely) with no substrate and a divider so I can have an area for the newborns.

Any comments?

What do you need the divider for? are you planning to put adult fish in the fry tank too?
My intentions were to seperate batches, however, if this is overkill, I will forgo the divider and let them all congregate.

Thanks for all the help!

I have my fry in a 10 gallon tank with gravel and live plants, they seem to like it. I make sure when I vacuum the gravel that I dont get em, I havent had a problem.

I keep a large clump of Java moss in with them, the babies have somewhere to hide if the adults are starting to look at them like lunch, and they stay there while I vacum, so I just clean around the moss, and no babies get abducted

Buy a small breding trap.
Put the female in it just before she's ready to give birth, when I notice one of my ladies is preggo I keep an eye on her 'till she looks like she's gonna explode, when she's HUGE I put her in, usually within a couple days, sometimes hours she has her babies, I take her out and let the fry swim freely in the trap.
In time they get bigger, of course, and their waste may start to build in the bottom of the breeding trap, I used to try to clean it manually, but have since started using a submersible filter beside the rap to keep clean fresh water flowing through the unit, which works just fine.
I breed my guppies in a 25 Gallon, heavily planted tank and have several dozen "batches" on the go.
My LPS allows me to bring them in and get a discount on products in the store.
Some I keep.
The rest I feed to my clawed frog.
I hope I dont offend anyone by saying I use them to feed my frog.

But after putting as much money into my tanks, a little free food goes a long way.
