here's a pic of a tank someone is giving me. she lives about 2 hours away so i have to wait a bit to pick it up and am curious about the size. she said '50 or 70 gallons.'

if those are 8x10 promo pics on the wall, i'd guess it's about 40" long.

also, i'd guess this thing filled will weigh about 500 lbs. and would like any ideas on whether or not the included stand will support this weight. it's never been used.

thanks so much!!!

at a guess
40"L X 18"D X 18"H

what you planning on putting in it?

I'm not sure how to tell the size with just a picture. But when you get it, you can use this formula.
Take the measurements, in inches. Width, Height, and Length (I don't think it really matters what order those are in). Times them by each other (W x H x L = #) and then take that total and times it by 0.00433 to get the gallons.

However! That's going to be a bit off. My 10 gallon tank actually only holds 8 gallons. My 19 gallon tank only holds 15 and my 60 only holds 50. So what I do to get an exact amount, is measure just the area of the water. Such as, the inside boundries of the glass, and just up to where the water line would be, rather than the outside measurements of glass, and the top of the tank itself. Plus, you'll have to guestimate how much volume will be taken away by whatever gravel and decorations and equipment you might have in there after it's all set up....that should only displace a couple gallons at most, though.

thanks, wolf and dawn!

wolf - i am getting the tank much sooner than expected so when it arrives home it's just going to cycle for however long it takes me to decide. at first i wanted just an oscar, but i really like community tanks, so i am starting to lean toward that. as far as what to put in it, i do not know yet! maybe a cichlid tank. but, i really like assorted stuff with a couple or few of each species.

i will say this - i like plants, so perhaps the oscar idea is becoming less and less feasible.

what do you think?

dawn - wow, thank you for that. i can't wait to get everything started. your post was a big help.

Yeah, I can't say for sure the gallons on that tank (I'd guess it's about a 50g), but it's not going to hold an adult Oscar.

Since you like the idea of an oscar, you might consider a semi-aggressive community tank using South American cichlids that don't get as large as oscars. Firemouths and Acaras come to mind, though I'd be more inclined towards a small colony of apistos and a big shoal of black phantoms.

Tons of possibilities, that's for sure...

with some help i decided on cichlids indeed. hurray!!
