Pool filter sand. It's a little coarse, but it doesn't bother my corydora shoal.

Play sand. I like the look of it and my corys love it.

I was planning a soil tank, but it looks like it is going to become a discus breeding tank once the jaguars vacate it.

Since getting back into cories, I changed all my gravel to sand. My landlady had almost a full bag of play sand in the shed so that's what went in. It's very fine and the cories love digging! Best choice I have made.
My fry tank has the black unipac "sand" which is jst fine gravel, it's not nice at all.

In my 36 gallon I have about 3/4 Stony River brand black sand combined with about 1/4 black gravel.

In my 20 gallon I have very fine, Lowe's playsand that looks awesome but since it's so fine, it tends to get sucked into the filter more than others.  It also has some shiny mica looking bits to it which look cool but I'm not sure that's good for the fish.

In my son's 55 gallon we have a combination of that Lowe's type playsand with Home Depot playsand which doesn't look as nice, but it also doesn't get blown around the tank as easily as the Lowe's type.  It might be the best combination though cost wise.

But, I still love the look of the black sand with the plants.................

my problem with playsand is i worry that it might get the water cloudy

Mines created a sandstorm for an hour or 2  then cleared by itself.

may get the water cloudy to start with almost all sands tbh, no matter how hard you clean them they will end up clouding the water, and eventually they it will clear up,

i use Unipac Senegal Aquarium Sand

much more expensive than play sand but i love the orange tint it gives :)
