Right now i feed them flake food and sometimes a shrimp pellet. They all seem to like flake well, but i know they need something different.

Would insects or worms that you find outside work well? I don't really want to buy live food.

I usualy feed my fish flake in the morning and bloodworm on the evening, small meals, spread through out the day, I also give them chopped earth worm, i clean them up and soak them in water for a while so all the earth inside them can be passed, chop them up and bobs your uncle, free, nutrisious, delicious and your fish will go crazy for them.

It depends on their needs. Fish are different, lol.

A good mix of veggies/flakes/SOME (dont go overboard, lol )fruit and live foods wouldnt hurt, ;).

Now if you have a great white--- he might not appreciate the veggies.

Oh yeah-
Make sure the bugs arent sprayed with chemicals, .

Depends on the fish you have really. If you have vegetarian fish then you are gonna want to feed them things high in plant materials, i.e. veggetables...but if they are carnivorous, you will want to feed them more meaty foods, i.e. beef heart, shrimp. You can mix the foods with out too much problem...but remember the fishes needs and normal diet. Also, the plant eating fish have a different intestinal system than meat eating fish...so each type is more adapt to digesting their ideal food source. What i like to do is go to the grocery store and get a bunch of things. Here is a list of the stuff i mix for my fish and how i make it(note there isn't any amounts...you just have to learn to wing it and figure out what works best:
Garlic
Celery
Brocili
Brusselsprouts
Peas
Banana
Avacado(very little)
Beef Heart
Liver
Chicken(thigh or breast)
Shrimp(cocktail normally)
Fish(salmon, trout, cod, tuna...doesn't really mater...i like to use cod if i can)
Octopus OR Squid(depends on my mood...lol)
Vitamin B pills(the gel cap liquid ones)

I place these all in a blender so that there is an average ratio between them so there isn't one dominant food source. I then put in about 1/4 water and squeeze four Vitamin B pills into the the blender. Then i puree it for about 2 minutes or until it is a uniform size throughout. Then i tank an eye dropper or serving spoon and pour it into an empty Formula One fish food package( i use this cuz there are already neat little cubes there that used to hold the food)and then i place it in the freezer. When i want to feed them i take out one of the cubes, thaw it in some warm water and give it to them in the tank. The nice thing about it is that it never has the same stuff in it so there is plenty of variety and its allowing all species of fish to get an opportunity to eat.

Hope this helped! Enjoy!

Yeah, I think i have carnivores, herbivores, and omnivores, so i think your method would work best. I just need a blender :*)

Well, hehe, depends how pureed it has been. Like i have made it like soup..and that clouded the water for about 5 minutes in parts of the tank but then it cleared. I have learned to just puree it enough that the pieces are broken up and small enough to fit in the small mouths. Generally as a rule if i can't see the chucks of stuff then i have pureed it too much...lol. Normally though if you do it right it doesn't cloud the water. And feed just little bits at a time...let them eat it and feed more if they are still hungery...that way there isn't any wasted or at least not as much. :flex:

I always think that freah veg is a good thing to feed fish. My clown loaches go mad for cucumber and especially lettuce. When they are feasting my other fish hang around behind them to pick up bits floating around!!

:p

If you don't want to buy live food why not go for frozen food? There's loads of variety, just hack off a bit and thaw it out for half an hour before feeding it.
