Hi there,
Not sure if this is the right place to be posting this, as it's not strictly a fish.
But whilst I was cleaning out my tank today and having a dig around in the gravel, this little creature popped out, so I scoooped him out and set him a aside in a pot.
I have no idea what it is, its seems to move like a fish, but obviously has very insect like features! Anyone got any ideas?

Thanks, Amy.

looks like a damselfly nymph. pretty harmless.

Agreed. Damselfly larvae have 3 "tails" at the end of the abdomen, so they're pretty distinctive. Quite common in garden ponds, and can come into aquaria via plants and live foods cultured outdoors. They are predatory, but only the tiniest fry would be at risk. Best kept outdoors though, or perhaps in an unheated tank if you want to watch the whole process. The adults are very pretty.

Cheers, Neale

wierd found one of these last night in my tank and is in the post to pest control (he asked for it in another thread as i advertised it)

Ahh, as long as it's nothing harmful then! I will put it in my pond =]
Thanks for the quick replies,
Amy.

yep, i love them, they are really cool. good to hear that it's getting a nice pond to live in.

cheers :good:

NOOOOOOOOOOOOO DONT PUT IT IN YOUR POND, that is a urigamus monixidus, it the larvea of an indonesian water scorpion and will grow to 3 ft long. as a larvea it will be capable of killing the hardiest of pond fish let alone your aquarium fish. im surprised it hasnt killed of your entire aquarium allready. i suggest you contact the uk border agency, they need to be contacted as soon as possible and will probably quarantine your house to contain it as a fully grown specimen will be more than capable of feeding on dogs and small children. also it carries tb. im no expert and could be mistaken but better safe than sorry

oh, we all better run then, and lock up our kids and dogs, oh, the horror, i don't know what to do....

anyway, that aside, damsel fly nymphs are pretty harmless to fish bigger than fry, and grow to be, well.... a damselfly.

it looks tasty anyway, wait until it gets to 3 foot and batter it. lol

sorry, i was wrong its not a Damselfly, its actually a Dragon. I'm suprised it hasn't burnt your hour down yet. It will pillage your whole street soon, then it'll try and find a princesess and run off with her. You'll have to ring the local knight in shining armour to save us all!

no its a baby lock ness monster lol

I had a damselfly larvae in my tank and i flushed it down the loo. I can't find any pictures of the larvae for these "water scorpions" which i think are real but i can't find Indonesian water scorpion.
If you can post a link to explain them then i will read it.
