My external was bought and fitted with a pad in each basket (I now think my LFS messed up on the price match deal of £300 for filter plus media) and would now like to fill the baskets with Eheim media, but it looks an absolute minefield!

There are media sets available for £50 (this is what in hindsight I think LFS was suppoised to be supplying me with, not a box of 4 pads), which contain something like 4 litres of Ehfmech and 2 litres of Substrat Pro, but I get the impression that it is far better to have more of the latter?

I would really appreciate any input about what types and how much of each type I should buy, plus any "cheap" (relatively) places to buy the media from :)

well Eheim do sets for all their filter. on ebay they sell for £20-£50. and i would stick to their recommendation. however, this does seem the wrong way round. what filter have you bought?
the LFS was, probably, correct. Eheims don't, normally, come with media. but are offered, on occasion, as kits.

still. I would suggest equal amounts of each. or, fill the trays with media, till they are full enough to allow the filter pad to be added, without restriction.

It is not unusual to find both options offered tbh.

My 2075 came with media. My JBL e1500 also came with media but foam pads which I'll replace over time.

lol. what i meant was, Eheim don't, themselves, sell kit products. these are done, for the most part, by distributors/importers. the important thing is, the LFS did nothing wrong in selling the filter solo, so to speak.

What really did not help and this is why I think my wonderful LFS accidentally "ripped me off" was that Eheim do a pad set (cost about £12) as well a true media kit containing Ehfmech and Substrat Pro (£50). As they knew I was asking them to price match the filter itself for £250, you would have thought they would have realised which kit I was after. But its far too late to do anything about that now, I now simply want to get the ceramic noodles and alike for the filter I've had ~3 months, so that I'm getting the most out of the product and have a good colony of bacteria in there.

Where more confusion comes in is that the £50 kit contains more Ehfmech than Substrat Pro, but I've read and heard some owners of Eheim filters using almost entirely Substrat Pro...
