If you have read my "odessa barb" thread you will know that my 4 odessa barbs have been in hiding for the last week, when they do pop out for food i see no problems and they are nicely coloured. Any reason why they would be hiding all the time.?

Bump. I'm very curious about the answer; perhaps someone with more Barb experience will have an idea.

Hey Mike, its seems after 6 months of threads im finally being ignored, sobs...maybe ill just leave the forum forever and flush my barbs..lol!

Awww :-( , such melodramatic miseries!
I'm no expert on barbs, but generally with shoaling fish the more you keep of the same type the bolder they are. I'd recommend getting more of them on that basis (assuming you've the space etc).
Other things I would consider -is there anything they could interpret as "big and scary" in or near the tank? and, do they have adequate shelter?

My wife is quite big and scary", maybe she is scaring them, but no i jest. I have 2 quite large Gouramis who sit at the top of the tank but they are by no means aggressive..?

Hey, no matter what the barbs are not guilty.

I've had my questions ignored too...usually simply because nobody has the answer.
But this hiding Barbs things....there ought to be someone out there capable of making the right guess.

You know, maybe post the picture of the tank. I just realized that 60L=15G is kind of small..maybe they hide because simply there is not a big enough area to swim?

60l is very small for that mix of fish & I expect if you rehome the gold gouramis to a suitable tank -ie one big enough for 5" fish - you'll see a lot more of the barbs.
A couple more barbs would help but the tank isn't big enough.
I last kept Odessas in a vision 180 & i would say that is about the minimum for such an active fish.

Thanks all, i was pretty much hoping you would say that as i have been looking to "rehouse" my gouramis for some time (most boring fish i have ever seen)....not there fault i know!! If my LFS wont take them back what options do i have..? Im not spending money on a small tank to re house them as im planning a new 90L tank for the end of the year. I suppose im opening a terrible can of worms with this but has anyone ever flushed a perfectly healthy fish. Im not of high moral being so i thought id ask..?

please dont flush any fish anytime anywhere for any reason!
im sure your lfs will take them back although you may not get what you paid for them probably they'll exchange them for something else or if not try some other lfs or advertise!!! ( you can advertise on this forum for a start.

Its not a money thing, ill give them away free if someone in the Dublin area wants them.

Maybe a good idea would be to move all your odessas and gouramis into the larger tank and find some other stock for the smaller one. Fish always show more interesting behavior if they don't feel crowded, which is exactly why you probably feel like your gold gouramis are boring. I have 5 in a tank almost 4 times that size and find them to be quite interesting. They are in with odessas, too, and all get along very well. The odessas don't even feel the need to shoal. I think its a nice tank and they make great tankmates.
