Hi all. I have heard on here that a little salt in your Betta tank stops the fish from getting sick. Do you just use ordinary table salt that you have at home for cooking, or do you have to get special salt? Also, do you disolve it in boiling water, cool it and put it in the tank????

Aquarium salt if the fish is showing signs of being sick 1 teaspoon per gallon. Some people use just a little when they do water changes. Dissolve the salt in a little of the aquarium water.

Whatever salt comes off of the frozen brine shrimp is all I add to my tanks with FRESHwater fish. Asking a salt question for freshwater fish is opening up a bit of a pandoras box to speak. I think this thread will inform you a lot about salt and why it is used (and why it is pretty unnecesarry excpet for medication and some livebearers). http://www.fishforums.net/index.php?showto...ounder&st=0

actually, in fresh water systems, salt comes from the rocks and the substrate. a small bit of aquarium salt helps prevent diseases such as ich

Once again please read the thread I posted. There is no doubt at high enough levels salt will kill ich. Ususally people dont add enough anyway to prevent it, if you do it puts stress on the fish and its regulatory system. You can also prevent ich from from quaratining anything before you put it in. ICH does NOT live in every tank. Add salt if you feel it is necessary but I strongly urge you to re-read the link I posted as many of the experts on this site explain the negative effects of using salt on FRESHwater fish.

I don't use salt with mine and never have done, they are all perfectly fine without it. :)

Agree with the majority of posters, salt is unneccesary unless as a last chance treatment.

Something to be avoided IMHO....
