What Kind Of Rock Did You Use

Hello All

I'm rebuilding a 72 gallon bow front tank for my Peacock community.

I'm exploring alternatives for rock and I want to provide them as many cubbies and caves as possible.

I was wondering what type of rock you have personally used in your tanks and if you'd be willing to share pictures

No pics at the moment but I went for Tuffa (sometimes call Ocean) rock and rose quartz for effect and something a bit different. Slate also works well for building caves etc.

a lot fo people call me crazy but i use GLASS rock. they carry it at my LFS and it is sold by the pound for like 1.50/lb. It comes in beautiful colors and an endless amount of shapes and sizes. I have a 45 gallon setup with my africans and they absolutely love it. Plus it makes good caves that you can see through and spy on your fish

Glass rock is great, but as always watch out for sharp edges and if there happen to be any, sand them off.

Lava rock would be great as it would help raise the GH of the water which is really ideal for africans cichlid..some holley or honey comb rocks looks good as well...

I use rocks I stole from the beach

Have no idea what they are but they were all boiled and all passed the vinegar test and have been fine in my tank for 12 months

I have just put a Mbuna tank together and used holey rock and grotto rock - fish seem happy and I like the contrast they both give. Good luck with your set up

Hi,

i use grotto rock which is porous and is great for many reasons...

1) it is light in weight

2) it acts as a further biological filtration surface

3) you get less water displacement

4) it is an ideal rock for fry as it has loads of little holes for them to hide in

5) its very easy to stack and grips very well therfore being sturdier

i love the stuff!!!

I raided my garden and my nans garden for rocks. Just had to check them all with vinegar then boil them and scrub them. Much cheaper than buying them!!

the 'vinegar test' does not apply to african tanks..

What is wrong with the test then?

The vinegar is to test for calcium carbonate in the rock, which will affect the perameters. Africans theoretically prefer the higher perameters anyway, which means there is no need for the test.

I wish my fish store had cool stuff like that. I have a selection of like 25 fish available at my nearest store. I need to go up to Des Moines and check stuff out, but a half an hour is quite a time to transport any fish.

I often drive 30 minutes to go to a fish store

the nearest Big Al's is about 20-25 minutes from my place. Of course I have maybe 5 or 6 stores within a 10 minute drive, but i like to go to different places because they all have different selections.
