Mike, one possible heads-up...

If the black stuff you found happened to be onyx sand, it's probable (according to what I've read -- no direct experience) that it will raise the KH of your water. This may or may not be a good thing, depending on your water.

As a matter of fact, Bol, I do need to raise my KH a bit. I don't think that sand would bother me at all! But, I will probably do a lot more research on this topic before I make a crazy decision to switch over! Thanks for the websites, I will read up!
