I have had this fish now for about a year, I have no idea what type it is or what family as it could be a loach or could be a catfish, it is very thin like a loach, but it is patterned all over. I have looked in books and on the internet and cannot put my finger on what it is. Could somebody help me?

A picture would help. There are many loaches wich are "patterned" and the patterns vary by the species, so no one can tell without seeing it...

I have tried to take a picture, but it always darts back into its hiding place, this is the best picture i've got:

At a very big stab in the dark an adult Pakastani (yo-yo) loach, they change a lot from the juvi markings that they are purchased with.
Aside from trying to get a better picture, giving a description such as the approximate size of the fish, how many whiskers/ barbels it has around the mouth and any food preferances it appears to have might help nail down am identity.

There are some really nicely reticulated patterned Pakastani loaches availlable in the trade

Well I know its a bottom feeder, and usually likes blood worm/daphnia and its about 4 inches. If that is any help? But i shall research Pakistani Loaches so thankyou.

Just looked it up, for certain it is a Yo-yo loach, thanks a lot

No worries, mine are doing a fantastic job of cleaning up the rams horn snails in my tanks, so if you want to give yours a real treat that it will adore rams horn snails are a must. Mine are also living with cherry shrimp and so far the shrimp population has not decreased but that might just be because the Pakastani loaches are enjoying the snails too much.

Thanks everyone for all the help, sorry for a late reply, only just checked, I will pop down to the fish shop tomorrow to buy some shrimp andperhaps snails?
