the answers on the back of your link :) Zebra Pleco. Are you positive it was one of these? they are relatively rare, and generally fetch a rather impressive price tag.

is there anythin which looks very simular

If its a Zebra plec, give me the address and I'll be at that LFS banging on it's door at 9am buying it!

Just done a quick google, and found L260 Queen arabesque, and the Candy striped pleco, and a royal pleco

I've seen Royals in quite a few shops, then can reach 13" (according to planet cat), and are 'relatively' reasonable on price, so that seems likely, as it 2.5" already.
The candy striped i've never heard of, the queen i've heard but never seen, but both of these can reach up to 3" or thereabouts, making the one in your shop nearly full grown if it is one of these 2, plus the queen, and probably the candy will carry higher price tags that a lot of fish (not as high as a zebra tho) :)

I'm guessing L168

Or a clown plec.

Wait - Zebras don't have bristles so it wasn't a zebra plec.

I find it difficult to believe that you'd mistake a zebra plec once you've seen one lol. http://planetcatfish.com/catelog/species.php?species_id=168

However, perhaps it could have been a zebra oto? http://planetcatfish.com/catelog/species.php?species_id=353

Or maybe a loach of some kind such as these yo-yos: http://loaches.com/species_pages/botia_almorhae.html
Or these botia histrionica: http://loaches.com/species_pages/botia_histrionica.html

When you say it had whiskers like a bristlenos, do you mean it has 'barbels' (like the pairs of 'whiskers' you get on cory catfish) or do you mean actual bristles like a bristlenose plec?

Also, was it quite active?
