1.025 for me because that’s what my LFS runs their systems at
so 1.025 it is to makes it easier for me to acclimatise :good:

well it has always been 1023 for me in my fish only tanks and in the reef it is about 1024 1025

I've always thought of 1.024 as ideal, and since that's what my lfs keeps theirs at, that's what i aim mine for as well.

I have mine at 1.026 as well. Before I got an autotop up it did used to go up and down a little. Not too fussed as long as its between 1.025 and 1.027 and its stable.

glad this post come along as i just checked my reef tank and its about 1.029

Who knows how that happened as i have an auto top up system for the water, prehaps ive been mixing a little bit to much salt at each water change causing it to creep up a fraction each time.

Dropping it to 1.026 as of now

^^Don't suppose you add Magnesium supplements do you? Some of those can pull up the salinity when dosed

Yes i do add magnesium.....once a week with the correct ammount per litre as written on the bottle to keep mag at a constant level.

What chemical(s) does the supplement use for the Magnesium part? What you usually have to do, is add a two part Magnesium supplement to a 2l pop bottle and then add in non-chloride salts for balling followed by RO water, such that the salinity in the tank is the same as in the bottle. Then, when you add x amount of supplement, you first remove x amount of water from the tank :good: A good supplement will use Magnesium Chloride and Magnesium Sulphate, which when added to water makes free Magnesium ions and Sodium Chloride, or table salt... This is why salinity goes up when you dose Magnesium, if not removing some water from the tank at the same time. Also, dosing just Magnesium and Sodium Chloride over time will mess up the ionic balance in the tank, hence why Non-Chloride salts for balling have to be added the the Magnesium supplement
