Owning 8 growing balas in a 6x2x2 (150 Imp) I myself am not a fan of anything smaller. At 8" they are already finding there is not a great amount of room to really "open up their fins" as they like to do. This is more than just the fish size compared to tank size.
Think how people say danios need a big tank because they are fast active swimmers, I think it is very similar with balas. Once they get going they barely push off their fins before slowing down.
At the end of the day it is about what you are happy keeping them in. Having been there I am not so happy with keeping balas in less than a 6x2x2, but to each his own. So long as the tank is 6 foot you are giving them better conditions than most will end up with.
