Would like to know exactly what is the difference between a ballast for a T8 and T5 tube....
I have read differing accounts.... some say that they run at different Voltages/frequencies - if so WHY ?

Are we being led on here, into buying yet more gear we may not need ?
Surely a florry tube is a florry tube ?

T8 tube can be run on a conventianal ballast with choke.
T5's have to be run on a electronic ballast, they would burn out a standard ballast because their start-up & running volatges are higher. They are also 2-3 times brighter than standard tubes.

3/8th of a inch ;)

the T8 and T5 refer to the diameter of the tube - T8 being 8/8th (1 inch) and T5 being 5/8th.

As for the balast, T5 offer a lot higher output for the same length tube. as such the T5's will need a balast that can supply it with the extra power needed to drive it.
