I was just wondering, what is the biggest fish i could comfortably fit in a tank 40"L x 18"H x 12"W (144L/38G).

Not expecting anything that big i was just wondering as its the biggest size tank i can get at the moment :( so would need to be able to house the fish for life. Not interested in weather it is compatable with any tankmates or not. :)

thanks for the help!

speaking purley on size i'd say 10" is the biggest you can get in there, i'd stick to 8" to make it more comfortable.

oo 8" sounds good :) but suppose it depends on the fish, may be getting a free tank that size soon so was just having a wonder, thanks for the help :good:

absolutely, some larger fish like a lot of swimming room some are much more sedentry. depends on the species but that's a rough guide to start with at least.

I think Jack Dempsey's might be a bit too boisterous for that size, though it depends on the fish a bit, I guess. Some might work out alright. Severums are another option, but again that cuts it close.
According to the species index here, an Elephant Nose might be okay, if you want a bit of an oddball. xD Peacock spiny eel also works for that. Or hey, there's a snakehead type, too. Can't remember the name though, heh. ^^"

Go with the spiny eel! xD
