What is the best way to attach a background. Someone once told me to use vaseline but I dont know if that works. Also the background my hubby got was blue on one side and black on the other. What side would look best and show my fish off at their best.

I personally like black the best. I have painted the back of all my tanks black. For when I started out and had just the stick on backgrounds, I just used tape. I can see what the person who told you about the vaseline was talking about, but unless you attach it really loosely, it should be fine with just a few pieces of tape.

Ox :good:

yeah just use selotape!

I like black for tropical tanks and blue for marine tanks..... personal preference though! :good:

I used Vaseline with my background and it worked a treat!!!

Just cut your background to size, then apply the Vaseline thinly to the background (not the glass) rubbing it on with a piece of kitchen paper, then attach it to the back of the aquarium loosely at first. (It clings on and won’t fall off giving you time to fix it if its crooked)

Move it around so it’s in the spot where you want it to be, then take out a credit card and run it along the back to take the bubbles out as much as you can.

The next day, do the same again with the credit card to remove any obviously big bubbles that might still be there, then after a day or two any bubbles remaining seam to disappear completely anyway. (I think it might be the heat of the aquarium that helps it smooth itself out ;) )

Voila! A neatly attached background!!

The two methods (tape & Vaseline) have two different effects…so it depends on what you like.

Using the Vaseline means there is no gap between glass and background…so the colour on the background appears more vibrant.

Using tape means there is air between the glass and the background so the colour appears different behind the glass….darker sort of.

It’s like when a photograph is behind glass in a photo frame…the colours become clearer when it eventually attaches itself to the glass.

Not really explaining myself very well. :S Do you know what I mean though?

Its a personal choice depending on what effect you like. :good:

I use aquarium silicon on the edges of the background that you can't see through the tank.
