It depends on the cichlids.  Are you talking about the South American cichlids or Africans?

Sand is always a good option, you cannot go wrong with it, no matter what kind of cichlids you have.

That's true, but crushed coral is better for Africans, while an inert sand is best for South Americans.

Sand. Africans are diggers - the sand won't hurt them if it moves over their gills.
