I have bought sand for my new tank to slow the barb erosion my corys are experiencing with the gravel in their current tank, i think sand looks a lot nicer aswell, especially in a well planted tank. :D

tsk tsk...i will say that the poll on whether or not fish are cool or not are annoying (make up your own mind)...however i havent seen this... i went with gravel because its all ive used lol...poop comes up easy and gasses dont get trapped in it like i've heard sand can do...
 
I perfer large gravel, because i tend to keep messy fish , and they get fine gravel stuck in there throats and swim around so much in sand that all you see is sand flying everywhere, and it covers my decorations. in my larger tank i use large smooth gravel as a top layer and a mix of sand and gravel under it, it seems to keep the plants well, since they dont attach well to the larger smooth stones, and keeps my fish from redecorating my hard work.
