there is a white cottony like spot on my dalmation molly's fin. i've not had much luck at this hobby so far. i practically have enough meds to open a fish pharmacy, although evertime i isolate and medicate it has not been to succesful. through my research i have not been able to find a proper diagnosis. everything i find at all similar, states something about spots on the body. i don't see any, but the fish is white. any ideas anybody???? PLEASE HELP!!!!!!! THX

Hi! I'm in a similar situation as u! I've been in this hobby for 2 months n I've not stopped treatments for my fishies!! But on the bright side, I've gained lots of experiences n knowledge bcoz of this! Without this forum, I think all my fishies wud've died!

Anyway, what u said is like fungus infection. If it's ICH, the white spots will b like salt grains. What kinda treatment r u using for ur molly? How long is the treatment going on?

Edit: go to www.fishdoc.co.uk. Might find out more!

i hope this forum will be beneficial, i would like to just enjoy my fish and not always worry about them. actually that might not be possible, i'm a mom. but the helpful advice i get will make it easier. at least i know i'm not alone. i've got snowball (my son named him) in jungle fungus eliminator. i haven't noticed much improvement on the white spot tho. other than that he appears fine, he's eating and swimming. i'm going to check out the web site you suggested. THX!!!!!!!

if it is white and cottony the it would be cotton or some other body fungus more than likely. So i'd isolate and begin treatment with a fungside.

but what needs to be determined is the root cause of the issue. what are your water parameters?

ammomnia, nitrite, nitrate and ph?
how long has the tank been setup?
how many gallons is the tank?
how many fish are in the tank?

the more information you give us the better diagnosis and treatment recomendation we will be able to make.

What size tank are we talking about? How long has it been setup with fish in it? Have you checked the water parameters? If not take a small sample of water to your lfs(if you don't have test kits) and they should be able to test it for you. Need ammonia, nitrite, nitrate, and PH tests done. That is the most important part of your tank. This may help:

Fungal Infections
Symptoms: White or cotton-like substance concentrated mainly on scrapes, surface injuries, fins or mouth.
Treatment: Treatment of fungal infections is relatively easy. There are a great many commercially available products for this, including MarOxy by Mardel Laboratories and Super Sulfo and Would Control by Aquatronics.

Information: This is a very common disorder which infects all kinds of tropical fish. It is intensified greatly with fish having damaged fins or cuts and scrapes. It is also much more likely in poor water conditions in which there are unacceptable levels of ammonia or nitrites. Fungal infections are also a sign of bullying by other fish. Fin nippers will damage the fins of other fish making them more susceptible to fungal infections and external bacterial infections such as fin and tail rot.

Fish will be affected by the quality of the water. If it is ich (white sopt), may the water temp is too cold for them. Recently, my fish got hit with ich. I managed to treat them with a solution purchased at my lfs and raised the water temp to 27'C.

Hope that will help.

i have them in a 10 gallon tank that's been runnning for 4 wks. no other fish are sick at the time. at different times there has been 6 neons that have died. i'm assuming that it is due to high nitrites which have recently come down. ammonia level is normal and PH is 7.6. the average temp is about 26-27 c. or 80 F. try to follow this... i initially had 3 betta tanks, 1 gallon size. each tank had 1 betta, 2 cory catfish and 1 otto. my sister has a tank exactly the same and she's lost no fish. i than learned about cycling the tank after trying to find out why the tetras died, in a 10 gallon i set up 4 wks ago. i felt the tank was pretty much cycled, so i put all but the bettas into the 10 gallon. my intention being to put filters in the small ones, let them cycle, than put them back. after i moved them 1 betta died from ich, the other from velvet. i lost one fish that i removed from the 10 gallon due to velvet or ich, couldn't tell because the fish was white and orange. i removed the dalmation guppy due to the white spot on the fin. that is where the question lies. it isn't ich,it's bigger. also once i get him figured out, i don't know what to treat the 10 gallon with, as it appears everyone is fine. i'm currently treating with bettamax as recomended by lfs, in my attempt for at least one healthy betta.i am aware there may be ich and velvet parasites in there. i told ya i'm confused!!!!!!
PLEASE HELP!!!! I DON'T WANT ANYMORE SICK FISH!!!!!!

Well, the first thing, are all your bettas males? You cannot put male bettas together! They will fight until the death!

And you are WAY overstocking a 1 gal tank. With 1 betta, 2 cories, and 1 otto you are looking at probably 5" of fish in a 1 gal space. This will only lead to disease and death, as it is virtually impossible to keep up a good water condition with those fish producing waste is such a confined area. Thankfully you got the 10 gallon, you will be much more successful with the fish in that tank. At the most, please only put 1 betta in the 1 gal tank. I would suggest using those tanks as only fry or quarantine tanks at best. I have a paradise gourami that would not get along in any of my tanks, so I bought him a 7.5 gal. This fish is only 2 in long and i still feel bad for him in that small tank. You had way to many fish in too small of a tank, thats why you are having problems.

So to help fix your problem, I would stop the bettamax. Add carbon to your filter for a few hours. Then remove the carbon, and start treating with Maracyd. Follow the instructions on the box to a T.

Hello everyone, nice to see responses!!!!! i only have male bettas, they never been placed together. as far as overcrowding, your correct. i decided against my attempt to put them all back together ( 1 betta and 3 other fish). i will get the med you suggested at lfs today. again all those fishies seem fine right now but i'm assuming it is a preventive measure. i'm still treating my isolated guppy with jungle fungus eliminator, he hasn't changed, the spot is still on the fin. he does appear lonely tho. that's probably just me tho, i think everyone needs a friend.

IMPUR, what does tetra boycott mean exactly??? THX for your help, wherever i look for it. your loyal to the fishies!!!!!!

I'll check back later. gotta get busy.

If you follow the link below the pic, it will take you to a thread explaining it on a diff forum. Basically tetra came out with a Nemo tank in response to the movie. They went on CBS morning show and showed a lady setting it up. Its 5 gallons, and she added a clown, a hippo tang, a sea star, and 1 other thing i forget. Basically WAY to much in this tank. The tang alone will outgrow that tank. She didn't even talk about adding salt and stated that plastic plants are only a little harder to keep than live plants!!! Check it out, truely disturbing.

I should move this conversation to chit-chat now, but unsure how to do that and keep it going. anyway thanx for the lead into tetra boycott. i quickly checked it out i'll look more in depth later as i only have a few minutes. i did catch a glimpse of that program but not enough to form an opinion. i'm glad i'm more informed on the horror all these poor fish are going through. i take my hobby very serious. i spent quite a bit of money trying to save my first betta before i had to let go. i've been wondering tho, how healthy are the fish i'm able to buy here in Alaska? i know they are not local. i feel as if i have to nurse them to health for them to have a good life. that could be part of my bad luck. we'll see tho, as i become more experienced. well, have to run again, nice chatting with you all. actually i'm headed to lfs for med for my 10 gallon friends.
