Hi,

Im not entirely new, but I bought a second hand tank that came with an air stone and a pump. It also came with this plastic container that has two rods coming out from it. Now is that a filter for the water or do I hook the air tubes up to it or what? The seller said it was a filter but I have no idea what it is. I plan on getting an aquaclear mini anyways for it (10gallon) but i was wondering what this thing is. Also it has little groves along the top so water can pass through.

Any guesses?

Thanks

I put the picture in my mini profile, now before you tell me to post it on a message i've tried I dont know why pics i take i cant post on normal messages, but its in my mini profile, whatever the thing is.

Thanks

Its an internal box filter.

Hi _]im :)

It's an old fashioned box filter. :D They are great for small tanks because they are effective and inexpensive to maintain. The filter media is filter floss that can be obtained at the lfs. A bag of it that costs $3 will last a very long time since it can be rinsed in used tank water and replaced in the filter over and over again. I use them in my fry tanks because of this.

Here's a link to an article about them so you can see how they work:

Thanks for the help!

So would I just be as well off using this type of filter as opposed to an aquaclear mini filter? No need in spending extra if this will work, but I'll just see what you guys think.

Hi _]im :)

It will work just fine for you. Then, if you want to get an AquaClear filter later, you can take the floss that you use for it and add it to the chamber above the AquaClear sponge. This will give you even better biological filtration than the hang on back filter alone.

In any event, the air pump and box filter is a handy thing to have in case of an emergency with another filter or if you need to set up a tank quickly for fry or to quarantine a sick fish. When you do get your new filter, keep this one too. :D

Thanks for all the help, its greatly appreciated!

I'll keep it updated let you know how it's coming
