nope not counting fins..i guess he just is a big blind betta. he looks young i learned its about eyes and scales the eyes tend to be larger if its a older fish and scales look more pronounced when a betta is old. which his eyes are normal and his scales arent pronounced so he is young

buddy is big though i was lookin at him in a non magnified cup next to flame and he is huge compaired to him and they are prolly around the same age

Bumping this to clarify "Giants" vs "Half-Giants", as it seems one of our members has recently had the good fortune to find a Half-Giant at an lfs!

Half-giant next to a chick.... :p

OK, I went to Jim Sonnier's website. I cant find anywhere that says 7 inches. Can anyone find a website that says what is considered a half, and what size a full giant is?

At the Orlando IBC Convention in June, 2002 several very large Bettas were shown in class G4, Form and Finnage. There were two about 7 inches long and three or four about 3.5 inches long.

One might be very careful when ordering a "giant" online.

A camera is a mighty deceptive tool indeed.

Check out how big this orange of mine is....

Look how big compared to this other plakat....

Yea right. That small one is one of Synir's babies...the other is a baby from Wuv. Although Wuv's are rather large, compaired to the others I have..he is not a "giant"...although as disscussed in another thread he could possibly have some in him somewhere in his lineage...possibly..not certain though. Wouldn't be right to say he does, when you don't know though..right? Even though that would make him super cool.

here's the same baby next to a female. -_-

Doesn't look quite so small does he? the angle and closeness of the camera to it's subjects makes them appear greater in size. I took this from behind the smaller one..so he appears to be equal in size to the female, which he most definately is not lol...not even close (love his little heart  ).

Here is a more fair representation of him ..compaired to the female

Hmm..what happened??? Look how just 2 pictures taken from different distances and different angles make this same fish look totally different.

Here you can see exactly HOW big he really is...with no room for exageration or slide of hands (due to the ruler lol). Still though..just from me not reducing the size of the picture..look at the difference in the fish, the only way you can tell he's not a full grown fish (or baby giant) is because the ruler is there.
Would be very easy to fool someone into thinking they were buying a "giant", huh?

I suggest always, always, alwaaaaays asking for multiple pictures of them next to other adult fish, or with a ruler (best imo).
Very tricky business indeed. I have seen SEVERAL on Aquabid claiming they have "giants" yet all the pictures they show are closeups with either as much of the background cropped out as possible or the background has been "fuzzed" (so you can't use the plants/rocks/otherfish in the background for size comparision), or the pics are blown up supersize.
Which leads me to believe they are trying to make the fish appear larger then it actually is. :shifty:
Personally speaking..if I was going to spend what those poeple ask for those fish....they would have to show me a picture of the fish next to a ruler. For $200 they could snap a decent picture with a clear ruler like I have..I gave $1.19 for mine..(or at least a printed out ruler taped to the tank), imho. Otherwise I wouldn't buy them...just too much money at risk.

the problem with taking pics near a ruler is that unless the fish is right up against the front or back of the tank (depending on where you put the ruler), you aren't going to get a true reading. if the fish is in the middle of the tank, it wont measure as large as it really is. when i took comparison photos of my (half)giants i tried to get a shot of him and a regular size plakat in the same place in the tank, in terms of length, width, and depth. that's about the best i can do.

I'm not talking about you guys taking pics to show us lol :p.

I'm talking about these sellers on AB that are charging $100-$200 for these fish.

For $200 they could sit their happy arses in fron tof that tank like I did and wait to get a good pic . It only took me about 5 minutes though..but for 200 bucks..sheese....bump it up to 30 if you gotta .

i still dont think id buy a giant based on a photo, unless i already trusted the seller. i'm getting a giant female to match thor from watt, i trust him though. maybe sometime in the future ill have ginormous plakat fry to sell. thor is at least 4 inches, im not sure how old he is though. the female is about 3 inches but she is only something like 2 months old, so i'm sure she will grow.
