What Inspired You Too.....

Different things have brought me to different levels. The starting point would be 14 years ago, when my daughter wanted an aquarium. Picked up a 10 gallon kit at the lfs. Your research sources at that time were the lfs & the library. It's a wonder more fish didn't die, that tank is still running, though the filter, heater, and tacky decos have been upgraded.

The next level would be when my dad, living in an apartment down the street, got a 55 dropped in his lap from a guy that was getting evicted. I helped him keep that running with the same info sources until around 3 1/2 years ago, when his health was failing & he relocated to a nursing home.

Since I had been caring for the tank, it went down the street to my house. Figured expanding my aquatic's knowledge would help care for his fish, I found TFF, along with a local aquarium society. That's when mts kicked in. After seeing a few fishrooms through the club, plus knowledge gained from the internet, it just sort of snuck up on me. Getting involved in aquatics is real relaxing for me, as I've always loved animals, along with building & making stuff. The two fit together well, and the cost isn't bad for the enjoyment gained.

I am 14 too! That's just weird.... we've had dogs/guinea pigs for ages, so we went to the pet shop and I saw some bettas. I thought they were gorgeous, so I did some research/begged parents for a few months and then I got my first fish, a blue/greenish betta called Charlie. I have never looked back!

Sheltering from the rain in Pets@home sent my daughter into pester-mode and brought about a relapse after an abstinence period of 30 years. Now she's wishing she hadn't, as I get steadily more hooked.

Can't remember why I chose fish the first time, but I did really want to study animal behaviour, and they wouldn't let me keep snakes (my husband has very similar attitude) :grr: . Actually, I'm not sure fish aren't more fun than snakes anyway- you get such variety.

Well the tank started out as a way for my Dad and Sister to bond, I remember those times when we would go to the LFS get an Angelfish, two small Cichlids and a bunch of Neon Tetras. Horrible I know but we didn't know anything about Fishkeeping then. Then we'd neglect the tank but not on purpose(still fed them every couple of days), as my Dad had alot to do and so little time to do it that he'd forget about the tank.

After the death of Solomon, the last Rare Tetra, I decided to make sure his fate wouldn't happen to another innocent resident and so I took over, with a log for any notes and to keep the population in check and a feeding schedule and regular water changes/tests.

Suprising how many 14 year olds are on this forum, I'm 14 too. :)

I have absolutely no idea.... If I recall, the annoying voice in the back of my head said 'Fish, now they look interesting'.... Now it's moved on to 'Go on. Go to London. You can borrow a few hundred quid for all the fish you want'.

Im 14 Too, Too o_O Lol I Got Into It Last Year Because I Had A Bird, A Rabbit And A Dog And I Wanted Something Different so I Got Feesh :D

well i got into fish when my wife decided to buy a established tank, on a whim really. after a sticky start i found the help i needed, and now cant think what i would do without them!!

After i went diving in Borneo (cant remember the small islands name...) and on a little island, called Pulau Payer between Langkawi (a small island that we were staying on, an hour by plane off the coast of Malaysia) and Thailand. The reefs were just amazing, and i just wanted to get something up and running...When we got back, there was a reef tank for sale, but i hadnt got enough money for it, so i had to wait, and hence ive got my 38g :D
Before that i had kept fish before, mainly coldwater/subtropical fish, like hillstream loaches etc, but i knew little about it...
Thats why im wanting to get a small(ish) reef tank going, and im hoping to get some corals for xmas. Anyway, thats how i got into it.

Hi,

My dad kept tropicals when I was younger and he let me help him. We always had loads of different pets. My ex wouldn't let me have fish (he used the old "we don't have room" and "it's expensive" excuses!). So, split from ex on my own in a house where I can't have pets (except my rabbit - the landlord made an exception for her!) and hey presto - fish tank!! He he he.

New boyf thinks they are great. We are currently researching marine as we'd like to start one when we get a bigger house (hopefully after christmas!).

Disc - no. I had never seen a senegal before. But now I haaave oooone :p

i saw my uncles cold water tank and then i went to his lfs with him and i saw some amazing tropical fish and after doing a bit of research i decided to buy my first tank an 80 litre and after just over a year, 3 days ago i got my new Rena Bowfront 180l and am setting it up as we speak.

p.s i am 14 too :)

As a child, we had a small 10g tank in our kitchen. I loved watching the fish, and that interest has stayed with me into adulthood. When I was pregnant with my son, hubby and I went to the Baltimore Aquarium and after that I knew I wanted fish at some point. When my son was 2, my sister moved out of her house and decided to give my son her 10g fish tank that had 5 fancy goldfish (don't know specific name for them) in it. Caleb loved the fish and named them all Nemo. We knew nothing about keeping goldfish and did the best we could with them. Gradually they all died off over a period of 2 years. How they lasted that long, I have no idea considering we did everything wrong. About a month after the last one died, we decided that we were going to get him some more fish. Went to the LFS and started looking. Hubby and I really liked the tropicals, and so did my son. We decided to go with the tropicals and bought a bigger tank (20g). We now have the 20g in our living room, and the old 10g downstairs in the family room. It's been a real learning experience, but I absolutely love it. We're hoping that after Christmas we can upgrade and get a 55g or 75g.

Started with a very old and very leaky small 10G tank my 'X' had in her garage. I said to her, "wouldn't it be cool if we got a fish to put in here." And from there, had two 10G, a 30G, a 55G, and planning a 125G or 150G for the future to house my bala's (thinking about housing them with an Oscar and a group of silver dollars). It's like an addiction.....just keep going......

As my name suggests I guess - love sports related to water be it swimming / fishing / body boarding etc. then eventually scuba.

Finally got to thinking it would be cool to have a reef in the house too.

Started to read up about it and then figured I'd give the reef a miss for a while 'til I was more experienced, so tropicals it is.
