Baby died last night. :( I can't figure it out. I've only had her for a week, and she's been fine the whole time. I had not noticed any signs of sickness. After a couple days, I put 5 other females in with her. Last night, I was getting ready to feed them, and Baby was swimming all over the place, but she was flipping over as she was swimming and swimming upside down and stuff, and then she just died. No wounds, no pineconing, no fungus, no ich... I can't figure out what happened. I put some Maracyn, Maracyn 2, and colloidal silver in the tank just in case, because baby did look a little bloated. But, the other 5 girls seem fine. They are a little stressed because Baby was the dominant female, so they are re-establishing their pecking order, but other than that, nothing is wrong with them. I just can't figure out what happened. :(

Here's a pic of her from when I first got her:

She looked exactly like that when she died, except just a little bloated. :/ Any ideas on what it could be? My gut reaction was dropsy, but she didn't look pineconed. :/

:/ That's a shame, sorry for your loss.

Sometimes a fish dies for no discernable reason. I hope you figure it out, though.

Aww that is sad. The lack of being able to stay upright sounds like a swimbladder problem, but was she just flailing or was she actually having trouble keeping rightside up? If she kept going upsidedown boyantly it is most likely swimbladder. bloaty belly....what has she been eating recently? She may have gotten a blockage, it sounds like she was in pain....so sorry.

I would keep treating the tank as if she were there, and stay up on the water changes just to be sure it doesn't spread to someone else if it was bacterial in origin. no sign of fungus or parasites, then it would likely be organic (ie: blockage) or bacterial

No, she was just flailing. It all happened within about 20 minutes or less. I checked in on them, then took care of Cauchy (my roommate's fish that just died of what was obviously dropsy), washed my hands, and when I came back, Baby was flailing around. :/

I am going to go through the full round of Maracyn meds, and then I'll do a water change.
