i gots a question

i had a plan to set up a 10g to 29g-donno yet.

whats going in? some dp's, some oto's, and hopefully some freshwater bumble be gobies.

but i keep hearing how it is very hard to tell the difference between freshwater and brakish bumblebee gobies.

and since im dumber than a door knob i think i might mess up.

soooooooooo, my question is if i accidentaly buy a brakish bumble bee goby for the freshwater tank what would happen to the goby?

 i dont wanna ruin a fishies life....its like breathing helium instead of oxygen for us....brakish and fresh are different....or are they? bom bom bom......god am i bored...... :flex:

There is one freshwater bumblebee goby, but it is very rare and the chances are you are not going to find it in any lfs- you are way more likely to get a brackish bumble goby .

u really didnt answer my question..... :/

and if its better not to do it, then what else can i put with a dp or 2 in a 10g?

i've not found either species of bumblebee goby (doriae or xanthozona) particularly scarce in Devon so far - seen both in several local stores recently. I have both in my brackish tank - the differences between the two species are fairly obvious when side by side; but maybe a bit harder to tell when you see them individually. the doriaes are larger, and the colours seem a bit bolder and the stripes are more clearly defined; and the xanthozona, the one that you want that will tolerate hard alkaline freshwater is smaller and thinner, with a kind of partial band running across its back near to the head - see the pics in the fishbase profiles below.

Re oto's, i know anything living with dwarf puffers, or any puffer really, are at risk; but i've not had any problems with my DP's (or my red-eyes) taking a liking to my otos so far - IME the otos are more than capable of dying for no particualr reason all by themselves

I got away with oto's and DP's for about 3 weeks. Then one morning, one had lost an eye, I moved them. Not worth the risk IMO.

probably because they spawn in freshwater but spend most of their lives in brackish.

re the dp thing - sorry to hear you didnt have any luck with them. mine have been together about 8 months now and touch wood no problems, guess its just chance/luck really isnt it.
