Dear all,

I have recently bought a Fluval Edge aquarium 23L and got everything else I needed with it too (sand, plants, rocks....). My aquarium has been up and running for 2 days now and is working fine apart from my Alternathera roseafolia (plant) commonly known as Alternathera pink. I chose this particular plant to go in my aquarium because of its deep red colour but over the 2 days its leaves have become thin and green around the edges. Holes are appearing too. It might be that our PH number is too low or too high but as i do not have a water test kit i do not know what my PH number is. I desperately need to now whether to bin the plant (because it is contaminating the water) or keep it, because Saturday the 22nd I will be purchasing my tropical fish and do not want them to die as soon as they get in the water!!!

although its sold as an easy plant, these plants don't keep there colour unless you are adding CO2 and are running high lights.

if i was you i would pop over to the new fresh water tank section and have a read up about cycling your tank.

hi
if you just setup your tank I think it wasn't a good idea to put the plant in because of the ammonia spik if you plant the tank like 75% it will be ok
and I think that red plants need more ligth, what is your WPG ?
did you use any ferts?

hope I help

thats what I know, please correct me if i'm wrong .

Dear Ianho

Thankyou for replying. I think I will remove the plant as I dont have strong lights. What plants do you recommend for beginners? Or do you recommend plastic?!

if you want something with a bit of redness in colour and wont get to big then i'd go for cryptocoryne wendtii (red) and something green like Lilaeopsis carolinensis or some dwarf hair grass. Theres loads of options, have a look in the pinned thread called 'parc' and theres loads in there about easy plants.
