Help, i did have a Japanese fighting fish in my tank until this morning now it's missing also a neon tetra. Have these been eaten do you think and by what?

This is what i have:
I large catfish
1 large angel fish
2 Gourami's (m&f)
4 Guppy's (orginally 6 but 2 died yesterday)
5 Neon tetras
3 Tigar Barbs
4 Red Eyes
2 Bottom Feeders (looklike small catfish but sliver)

Any ideas

what type of catfish have you got ? also neons are angel fish food in the wild do you know what caused the guppy deaths ? as your fighter & neon might have also died then all the other fish in the tank would /could have scavanged on their bodies

Iv'e been reaeding an other post about Guppy's dyeing and think first hting 2morrowi need to get atesting kit. Waht do i do about the angel and neons?

Iwas told the catfish wouldn't bother anyother fish

do you know what type of catfish you have ? you have been told that the catfish wouldn't bother your other fish without knowing what cat it is i dont know but you should remember that most fish are opertunist feeders so if they come across a body then they will feed on it also look at the catfishes mouth if it has a large mouth ie large enough to have swollowed your missing fish then it could be the culprit. yes you could do with investing in a testing kit then at least you can check your water stats then you can see if that is why you have lost fish as regards the angel & neons have you another tank ?

How long has the tank been set up?

I bought the tank 2ndhand about 6-8weeks ago and kept the original water.

The guy at my local shop showed me the ones he has and i pointed out the ones same as mine and he said it wouldn't bother other fish. He did say it namebut i cna't remember. Saying that it's mouth is pretty big though....!!!

With r4egards to the angel andneons i don't have another tank....they will obviously need to be seperated although the angel isn't going anywhere near them and is showing no interest at all.

Most of the bacteria needed for a healthy tank is in the filter, even if you are using the same filter most of the bacteria will have died off out of water and the water alone does not contain enough beneficial bacteria.

I think your problem is with overstocking a newly set up tank, it is more likely that your fish are dyeing and then getting eaten. Try to get the test kits and post the results here.

The filter came with the tank and was ony out of thewater for 4 hours max, would this have been long enough to destroy any bacteria. All the other fish seem fine and lively. But yes i will get a kit and post the results
