Hello everyone!!

I have this beautiful male betta which I named him Jolanar, his back/ Dorsal fin and tail fin are been ripped and badly damaged, its like as if he came out of a serious fights (which of-course he didn't) ... His fins were fine for a long time until I've seen his fins in this pitiful situation, what happened?? Is this some sort of disease or fungal infection??

BTW, Jolanar has no tank mates... Yup he is a loner!
I'll provide a pic of him if needed.

I pic would help to see if its a fungal infection or not. a infection wouldnt of happened over night though. what filtrer do you have. was his fins fine and then all of a sudden ripped or has it been a gradual thing. do you know your water parameters?

Do you have any decor in the tank that has sharp edges/corners he might have torn his fin on?

i had something like this happen to one of my guys, his got a filter? if he hugs it then the filter might be ripping his fins a little,
also another thing i have seen happen, sometimes he can get into a fight with himself... ripping his own fins and such, most of the time it will be if he sees a reflection of himself, go's to move away and sees his own tail thinks it is the reflections tail and attacks, well after the first attack he wont stop till the other one stops, or till his too weak to fight any more, well in saying that pretty much only way he will stop fighting is if he just makes him self tired,

make sure that there are no mirrors or reflective glass that could make him think there is another male in there.

Thats an interesting point. iv never thought of that but it does make sense

funny thing is that some people think putting a mirror in will make there fish happy or move more, well it is not too funny seeing what happens

Sorry for the late reply guys!! I forgot to check on the forum!

It seems my betta was nipping its own fins  there is no mirror in where my betta lives... Even though I don't know what's wrong but I guess boredom has a role in this, in the Bird world a parrot that is kept in captivity in a cage with no toys, no interaction of any kind will lead to boredom and boredom will lead to screaming, squawking and FEATHER PLUCKING!!

So because of that, I changed the bettas location into a different place and it's fins are starting to gradually grow back :hyper: yippee!! Birds and fish have something in common you see!!
