I have just come home to find my fire eel who has been with my for about a year dead, it was aprox 12in long and seemed ok this morning when I did the feeds on my tank's the water quality is fine (tested today) and it appears to have been feeding well, the only other tank mate is a tilapia they have been together for about six months without any problems, I did find when I removed it from the tank three quite large lumps along its belly which were quite soft so my question is could these be tumors as they appeared not to be hard suggesting it had swallowed somthing any ideas or suggestions would be a great help, I now have to go and tell my seven year old daughter who picked it out for last years birthday the bad news,

Many thank's Adam

Sounded bacterial with the lumps being soft, they can burst and infect the tank.
Any red patches or streak on the eel.
R.I.P.

No none at all looked perfect apart from the swellings inside of the the gut they were not external you could feel them under the skin, did a 50% water change to be on the safe side, at the moment it's a mystery, am going to keep a close eye on teh tilipia over the next few days, than'ks for you ideas.

thank's as it's the only one I have ever seen in my area, in the last two years I guess I will have to bite the bullet and tell my daughter tomorrow. -_-

i have a fire eel for sale

great what size is it and how much do you want for it, have you shipped many fish before, I have only ever bought fish from my local suppliers so this is all new to me thanks for the reply. :good:

I took my fire eel to my local centre where I got it from in fact where most of my fish are from and with a little further investigation I now know that it accidently swallowed some gravel whilst feeding causing a blockage, thanks to all who replied.

Ok sorry bless him at least you found out.
R.I.P.

Wonder if that was my tweety pie problem as he was always digging in the gravel for food.

according to my supplier it sounds like somthing that happens quite often to any fish fish that spends most of it's time looking for food in the subterain (spelling?) it is a shame that I have to learn all these facts after losing a beutiful fish but I suppose that is what keeping these wonderful creatures is all about perhaps before I get another fire eel I may change the gravel for sand .
