I did a good cleaning of my 25 gallon tank a few days ago...I transferred my betta, along with some other fish, into a temporary holding tank (a pitcher  ), anyways, when I put the betta back in with the others it started acting weird. He would lay on the bottom of the tank almost lifeless and barely breathing. Is this how they show shock? After a few days he seems fine and is eating normally but that first day I was worried he wasn't going to make it. Anyone else have this occur? I've done many cleanings and have never seen it do that before.

Did you remember to condition your water? Was the temperature different in the tank then the pitcher? :dunno:

let me add info to my post...

the pitcher was clean and the water in it was taken directly from the tank prior to me cleaning it...

I conditioned the water after the change like I always do...

upon further reading on this forum I noticed that it might be possible that it was a bit of shock possibly because I changed about 90+% of the water...is that possible? Maybe there was enough of a temperature change for the betta and it didnt like it. Although none of the other fish seem to have any problems.

Way back I kept my bettas in those little bowls (I know, I know, but I didn't know then...) I took them out onto our porch, where they could get the summer air and all that jazz... Well, I accidently left them there overnight and in the morning I walked out and found them all at the bottom of there tanks. I freaked because they all looked dead, but they weren't. It was just the chill from the night must have knocked them out or something. After they warmed up they were okay again, and I never left them in any even slightly chilly place again. I know mine were always very sensitive about the temp of the water, so that might have been what happend to yours.

I feel that 90% water change is too much and the temp variation likely to be too great. I change 40 % every few days but mind you I have a smaller tank (3 gallon for 1 betta)
