Letting it stand for 72 hours i imagine means i dont need to use an additive to neutralise the chlorine/ chloramine in the tap water.

Can you confirm as i am not a fan of our reliance on these additives- We use Nutrafin AquaPlus and Nutrafin Cycle but it would be great to do it without.

apprently yes thats what letting the water stand will remove the chlorine/chloramine i personnaly would still add a water conditioning product to make absoloutly sure of the removal.
as this would also remove other trace elements that allowing the water to stand on is own wont remove.

Hi, I would definately use the Aquaplus everytime it removes more than just the chlorine (happy/ier fish) oh and tap water every time but not from a tank source only cold or Combi boiler hot..

I have a water butt as well, but I don't use it for my tank, as I'm in a built up area so the air isn't exactly great lol & as far as I'm aware if rain water goes into the butt from your gutters, it's dangerous if there is any kind of lead on your roof as it can then be present in your water. Nutrafin cycle IMO is a waste of time & money, Aquasafe is a must though as it removes the heavy metals that may be present in your tap water. As far as getting the water up to correct temperature, I'd go with the same method as Chris W, which is also what I use. Fill your bucket (Asda do a 3g bucket for £1) near to your mark with cold tap water, then use boiling water from the kettle to bring the temperature up . My personal choice is not to add the aquasafe until the water is up to temperature & stirred, as I'm always worried that the boiling water may damage the effects somehow.

Best to keep everything you use in the tank in one place, preferably in the cupboard underneath (if it has one) that way, you know it's not been used for anything else. Do you use the bucket(s) you use for water changes for anything else?.
