It will be the perfect eye catching spot for it, and is solid oak and sturdy enough to hold it, and I can service it standing on the desk.

But I remember reading somewhere about putting something underneath the tank itself, but I can't remember why or what it was? Corrigated poster board comes to mind, but not sure...

polystyrene.

protects the base of your tank and reduces pressure between two hard surfaces (your glass base and oak desk)

yep, polystyrine (sp?). One little stone or piece of gravel, and crack!!!

Glass dont bend!!! :D :p

mines been sat on a new ikea table for weeks now with nothing underneath. its only a 30gallon though. I just made sure both surfaces were clean when i mounted it.

the only thing im worried about is bending of the table, which will be supported by bricks shortly in the middle
