Fish benefit greatly from variety, and any fish that’s even partly herbivorous will benefit from veg. And almost every fish benefits from live and/or frozen foods. Staple foods alone are not enough. Some of them are good, but they’re not quite complete foods yet.Just feed the fish, fish food. This is the same as feeding chickens all the scraps, chickens do best being fed chicken food which is designed for chickens. Fish do best being fed fish food designed for fish.
A side note to this I had a friend once who had a Giant Gourami he used to feed it ice cream as a treat.
I always fed my Silver Dollars Aquatic Plants. I would have thought the Potato's starch content would be far to high for any fish.Fish benefit greatly from variety, and any fish that’s even partly herbivorous will benefit from veg. Staple foods alone are not enough for all fish.
Most herbivorous plecs like potato. Herbies big enough to eat them love sunflower seeds (eg silver dollars).
Also Nori is good.
And don’t forget aquatic plants! If you keep fish that eat them, buy them some!
On the subject of blanching... pieces of plant in water gradually soften. As they soften they release different substances at different stages. This means they taste different at different stages. All fish have their preferred taste. So don’t blanch anything. Let it soften naturally to find out how your fish prefer it. Some prefer it hard, as soon as it goes in, some wait...
Tolerance to carbohydrates varies with species. Plecs are fine with an occasional piece, interspersed with other veg.I always fed my Silver Dollars Aquatic Plants. I would have thought the Potato's starch content would be far to high for any fish.
They most certainly can...mine love green beans, broccoli, cauliflower, watermelon, cantaloupe...just to name a fewWait a minute …. Veggies and fruits can be fed to our fish?!
Or, did I miss something?
Wow! Straight out of the kitchen? Or is it a special blend I’ll need to find? They most certainly can...mine love green beans, broccoli, cauliflower, watermelon, cantaloupe...just to name a few
Fresh or frozen, not canned, and no seasoning whatsoever....I'll often steam a mixture of frozen veggies for myself; about halfway through the steaming process, I'll remove a few pieces for my fish (the veggies are "blanched", at this point), let them cool, then feed to my fish....snails and shrimp love them, as wellWow! I use these inexpensive extendable forks. That way, if there are any leftover bits, I can remove them from the tank, without dunking my whole arm into the tank

Fun to watch them munching on veggies, as well...I usually offer veggies in all of my tanks at least once a weekAmazing!!
I am just getting the tank cycling and cleaning down to where it’s mastered. My fish are all happy and the tank looks amazingly clean. Feeding less and turning the lights on for a few hours a day, is probably all I can do right now lol. If I start adding veggies in there, I’m Afraid I’ll start a mess all over again. Curious as to what type of veggies because I am so temptedFun to watch them munching on veggies, as well...I usually offer veggies in all of my tanks at least once a week
