Ok I have a spare Aqua one 40 and I was wondering what coldwater fish I could get I used to have tropical but have decided I would like to keep coldwater instead I know I could have white cloud minnows but that is the only fish I know I could keep in the tank. Are there any bottom dwellers I know this is a long shot but its worth asking.

The reason I ask is that I would like something cheap and cheerful and I know a goldfish is not an option as they grow too big and wouldnt keep one in anything less than a 3ft tank. I want to set this tank up for my new baby in a few months time to try and get his interest, low maintanance fish would be best I have filters already its just the fish I need ideas on.

I miss having fish to watch they are much better than TV.

Not sure on the volume, but there's actually a whole range of fish (as well or instead of WCMM) that are fine at room temp, and in that size tank. For instance, paradise fish, pygmy sunfish and white cheeked gobies. What's the room temp. like?

you're a bit limited with only 40ltrs to play with
but this pinned topic on alternative coldwater fish maybe of some use to you

Aqua 40 is only 27 litres :( I have one, and will be setting it up for my sister/nephew in a few months time. I'm thinking some danios maybe, or some WCMMs. 27 litres does limit you though...

Danios could really do with at least 20 gallons as they are very active fish.

Thanks for the suggestions I've never seen any pygmy sunfish, white cheeked gobies or paradise fish in any of my lfs will have a look out for some though as well as looking into keeping them I dont want to rush into things just yet.

I thought with hillstream loaches you needed fast flowing filtration am I wrong.

I do like danios but you are right they do prefer to have longer tanks than what I have spare at the moment my friend has my 2ft tank which is already occupied.

As i was looking in the fish profiles i notice fish can live in 25'c and wondered why tropical fish need heaters??? When my room temperature is 24-25-26'C...

The heater helps keep the temperature stable. Fish are cold blooded and do not do well with fluctuating temperatures. It's not good to change the temp even by 1F, much less 1C or 2C.

Thanks for the tip.
