What fish with a Betta?

Betta's are like PitBulls, some are overly friendly, some are just friendly, some are standofish (no pun intended lol) but not aggressive, some are slightly aggressive, and some are just outright aggressive ...but ALL of them have the capability of severe attacks if "provoked" under the right circumstance..and as an owner you need to be responsible with them.

That holds true for every dog, really, not just Bull Terriers, Am. Staffs or any of the other dogs often referred to as Pit Bulls :) Any dog can become aggressive given the right conditions/provocation, and yes, I agree that the same holds true for bettas.

If you absolutely must put something in with your betta, put in something largeish, drab-coloured and short-finned, but I really don't recommend putting anything in at all. The risk to both fish (even the aggressor can suffer damamge if the other fish fights back) isn't anything pleasant to think of. If you want to use up the extra space in your tank, why not make a divider? Then you can put one of any number of other fish on the other side; even another betta, if you choose, and you won't run the risk of a territorial dispute ;)

ETA: hehe oneponygirl posted as I was typing; she's got an excellent pic of a divider, there, and you can find more on this forum and online as well. Happy planning!

i'll take my experiences and keep quite now, just be careful with your 'could be' blood thirsty killer

i've kept fish that you should never put with a betta for months with no problems,
but if you still think you should listen to the 'rules' then keep him in the 10 by himself, better safe then sorry right

i said it once i'll say it again, it's you that knows the temperment of your fish so it's you who ultimatley decides what goes in.

the topic starter asked for fish that could go in with bettas not to be lectured about wanting to keep other fish with him

Corys seem to be pretty safe on the whole with bettas but just be prepared to have somwhere else for them to go to if your betta doesn't take well to them.

littlefishies, you could always put a divider in your tank. I have a ten gallon that I divided unequally. I gave my betta Wraith about 1/4 to a 1/3 of the tank and the rest is occupied by three cherry barbs and three ghost shrimp. The divider is clear so it has the appearance that they are all together. They are all happy, healthy, no one is living in fear and I don't have to worry about Wraith deciding any of them look like lunch.

That's the best idea ever for keeping other fish with a betta   EXCELLENT.

Once upon a time I had male, yes male guppies in a 10 gallon with my betta. They co-existed beautifully for months. It was just perfect, the ideal set up.

Until one day, as I sat looking at the tank, I watched my peaceful, even-tempered betta that I knew so well rip off over half of his buddy the male guppy's tail and chew it up and swallow it. So ya, knowing your fishes temperment makes it just fine to throw him in a community tank.

:dunno: :dunno: :dunno:

He is happily residing in 1/2 of a divided 5 gallon aquarium. As are all of my bettas. I will no longer chance housing a betta with another fish. He has an apple snail and a plant in his half and he's as happy as can be.

Why not throw some pirahnna, alligator, or sharks in your swimming pool...If you feed them everyday they shoudln't get hungry enough to attack you...

Pirahnas dont eat people, they only eat coldblooded animals, only reports of them eating people is when the one person was dead before they started munching on them :D
but i did want to keep them lol only i dont have money or space lol

Back on topic the usual suggestions are apple snails and African dwarf frogs. The whole bettas will eat snails thing they may have a nip at the feelers and even get lucky enough to take it off but the snail will grow it back and adapt to pull it in quicker in the future, I have them together they seem to get on fine, not blood thirsty killers as was suggested
