What fish protects there eggs and fry when born!

My mum went to my LFS the other week and she was talking about breeding fish, she mentioned about the Livebearers but also the lady said to my mum that there is only one type of fish that protects there eggs and when the fry are born, protects the fry untill they get bigger. Which type of fish is this?

Please someone tell me as I'm keen on breeding them.

Sounds like cichlids to me! They are well known for their good parenting! There are a huge number of different cichlids to choose from too! Some need specialist care but there are others that are ok to look after and can go in community tanks.

Dunno what one the lfs would have been talking about though. I have Kribs and Chromidolilapia Finleyi.

They also said to my mum that if any other fish trys to go to there eggs or if they are already born and swimming round as fry, the parent will protect her fry and will possibly kill any other fish that trys to eat her fry...

Yup! Still sounds like cichlids. There are many different kinds though.

Many cichlids will protect their fry, usually the monogomous breeders. Some will do it lazily, others will fight to the death to protect their young. It all depends on the species.

No, those are cichlids IMO.

Some catfish will protect their young as much as any cichlid, bristlenose's are just one commonly seen example where the male will protect the eggs and young until they are large enough to venture out on their own. Also many oddball fish practice brood care, snakeheads for example will kill any fish that comes near the nest with the larger species actually attacking humans that venture too close.

Thanks for the information CFC. Are bristlenose's cat fish? If so I might buy them or I might even buy snakeheads

I have mouthbrooding cichlids, I hear that their particular way of breeding is very interesting.

Makes me think of setting up a tank just for them...I wish!
