what fish go good with sevrums?

Sevs get quite large. They will mix with lots of fish. Most of the time they are docile. but can hold their own. Firemouths, convicts, festivums, blue acara, silver dollars, keyholes, even another large fish like an oscar. I have had mine with even angels . Then again I have angels with convicts (6 adults, two of which are a mating pair).

The bigger question is how big is your tank? The larger a tank the better your options.

The pair of gold sevs I had where a mating pair and only chased fish away from their area, not harming anyone. The one was @ 6-7 inches long and the other was @ 9 inches easy. Great fish!

Good luck with your sevs.

Hey, Just found your other post 3 sevs in a 20 gallon too small. Don't add anymore fish. The severums will get quite large and fast.. You need A 55 Min. I would get a 75 or larger.

I kept sevs with cons and the cons beat them up alittle because teh sevrums were very timid adn would be quick to back down...id say try to leave out the cons they are highly aggresive.

I just got 2 Green Severums! Mine are kept with a BGK.
Everyone seems to be getting along. From what I hear Severums are a very docile for a cichlid.

:pepsi:

Yea we put two 1.5-2 inch Sevs in with a 1-1.5 inch Convict and the lil female Con was all over the Sevs... as well as the BGK. The baby Con has been transferred and everyone else gets along great. I think the point swampcat made is the most important one. If your tank is big enough, you can just about anything together. (think about it... many community tropical fish live in the same Amazon River Basin as Oscars, Piranhas, etc, etc... there is a lot to be said about space and cover).

Also there are MANY cases of someone successfully mixing fish that wouldn’t typically go together. In such cases we should see ourselves as lucky, not suggest it to others.

But hey, enjoy it since ya got it!

If you were thinking of doing a species tank for your sev's there are schoaling fish you can go with - just get them in the appropriate numbers. Congo tetra's and giant danio's are two that would work fine, but there are many others. Even small schoaling fish will be ignored in a large group.

Then of course you have an assortment of catfish and loaches that would work well too, as bottom scavengers.

As far as other cichlids, well, with a pair of adult severums I wouldn't do it in a 75.

just remember that Sevs are very docile for cichlids. Most of your main stream cichlids would be too aggressive for them...

See my siggy for what I have with my Sev :) They are all getting along really well. The kribs, neons, corys and serpaes are all full size and the sev and angel are both juvies.

Well, the kribs are terrorizing the cories, but that's another issue and has nothing to do with the Sev

I may add that sev's are carnivorous and may eat small south american tetras.

SEVERUMS WITH TETRAS?!? I have to disagree! severums are very aggressive fish, and shouldn't go with any small fish like tetras. "patti_n_jojo" you need to be more careful about the advice you give!

oh, p.s. some good tankmates as listed above are:

convicts
jack dempseys
terrors
oscars
about any fish that is the same size as the sev.
none of these will work well unless they are about the same size
