Hello what fish are best for small tank?. My tank is 14L about 4 Gallons?.
Im new to all this got me tank set up with heater etc, Just waiting for some fish now, Would like to no best fish for me.

thanks

Karen.

Sadly a betta and that's about it really.

I no neon tetra's are small fish but they are a shoaling fish and need a tank of 10gal, then in my opion that's to small for them to move around it once planted.

The tank is 40cm+ upwards does that make any diffrence. do i need any special requerments for a better?.
How much do they cost and whats the best type to get?.

Thanks.

a betta or a shoal of neon tetra at a push

How many Tetras?. is that the only to fish i could have like?.

You CAN'T keep tetras in there.

You could get just one dwarf puffer but you need to fishless cycle the tank first. There's a link in my signature about that.

BTW - it's 'betta', not 'better'. The name comes from the scientific name betta splendens :)

A betta (fighting fish) is probably your best fish options, though you could keep white cloud mountain minnows: a small shoal (4) would do well in a 4 gallon, and it would save the cost of running the heater too much. Not strictly tropical though.

If you don't mind considering other alternatives ADF's and the various Shrimp are great too.

White cloud mountain minnows are schooling fish and get to 1.5" they are NOT suited to a 4 gallon (barely) tank either! Your only fish options are a single betta or a single dwarf puffer (though they are sensitive). There are a few killifish you could try but I'm not too familiar with them. Right now, I think you'd be better off going for shrimp or a dwarf frog.

Neon tetras are very cheap, costing less than a pound in the UK.. perhaps a dollar in the US. They are shoaling fish and require their own company. a Small group is a must if you want to truly enjoy them. They are very actiev + need a mature aquarium due to their fragility: ie you would have to do a fishless cycle, I'm concerned that 14 litres wouldnt be enough though.

Are you asking about getting two female bettas? They'll kill each other in a tank that small and the minnimum you can keep (for females) is 4. Stick to just one male. The cost varies depending on the variety, color, strain and where you get it from. They are not generaly expensive.

I agree with sylvia one male betta.

The tanks 4 gallons. i read some were that you can put to in a 4gallon tank. Probs be best having one tho as you say, How much are they about £10 or more?.

Any tips on keeping Betta's.

Im just starting with the little tanks first then if i get good at keeping fish im getting a big one.

Read the betta link posted earlier. Ask in the betta forum for more information.

Just so you know, it's actualy easier to keep a bigger tank than a small one because big volumes of water are mroe stable.

Wherever you read keeping 2 females in a 4 gallon, it's not true and they would DEFFINATELY kill each other. Don't risk it.
