what combination of filters would you recommend for a 650 Litre (140 uk gallon) tank with a well stocked american cichlids.

dont really want to go 2 x fx6 as pipes would be an issue as they are large pipes.    plus fx6 only have 6 litres of media space and want more overall.

so what do u think ?

Can't beat a sump for media space if you do it right.

Otherwise I'll admit that I go on what I can get at the time for a sensible price. There's generally an offer on one brand or another, and I'm not loyal enough to any particular make to stop me shopping around. I do make a point of looking at the wattage for what they're doing though, as I pay the electricity bill, and some of them will cost far more than others to run for the year. Can make the more expensive filters look far more attractive when you factor that cost in.

very good point on power useage , thanks.
Cristal Profi e1901 is good on wattage and good media space but have no experience of them  (36w)

I use Eheim Pro 3 2180 with built in heater and a Pro 3e 2075 with hydor in line heater and my filtration and flow rate is brilliant with very little visible pipework in the tank, this is mainly due to a 'false weir' on the right hand side of the tank (600ltr) which hides the inlets, the tank is also heavily planted which probably aids in the stability of the tank.  I have 2 severum, 3 platinum acaras, a shoal of 6 denisoni barbs, 6 mascara barbs, 7 botia loach, countless bristlenoses (due to their prolific breading) and 2 siamease algea eaters.

I love Eheim filters, they are whisper quiet and only need filter maintenance every 6 months or so, take my word for it if you are not going down the sump route then these will do the job fine.

I was once a eheim only person then i got a proffesional 2 filter that leaked at the bottom , had replaced and new one leaked too. so has put me off a bit.
wouldnt mind the extra cost but dont want issues again really.

still loving my JBL crystalprofi's. Just 13 watts of power so nice and cheap to run. I wouldn't have any other filter now :)

what info do you need Clive? I'm running two e901's on my four footer. The larger filter will use slightly more power but everything else will be the same so I should be able to answer most of what you need to know

thanks hun , are they quiet comapred to others ?
are they well built ?
is media space good ?

virtually silent, excellant build quality, a doddle to maintain too. As I said ... I'd not entertain another brand now and I would recommend them to anyone. The only problem I've found is the pipes gunking up but that's a maintenance issue and laziness on my part. Hardly a fault of the build
