hi what external would you put on a 65 uk gal tank. I will have an oscar so needs to be decent but i havnt much money as im only 15. Or maybe 2 small cheaper externals would be benefit.

that end part was ment to say better lol.

Hmmm, it would help if you told use what your budget is? A 65 gallon tank with an oscar in it is going to need some serious filtration, as Oscars are 'dirty' fish. If you can afford about £130 then just go for a Fluval FX5 off ebay, you wont regret it. If you can only afford about £80 then you might be able to get away with a JBL CristalProfi 500 from ZooPlus (no delivery charges, and you will probably get it for less than that as they usually do a new member discount), I have a 250 and they are really nice filters! They seem to have larger volumes than many other makes, hence my comment of been able to 'get away' with one.

If your going budget, Tetratec are the best bet. An EX1200 at about £70 delivered should do it. Depending on budget, Eheim would be most reccomended on here, but I disslike them

JBL have had good reviews from PFK, but I don't know many on here that use them. That could be either a good or bad sign, as I don't know what they are like reliability wise.

There aren't many folks using JBLs as they simply haven't been available in the UK for all that long. I would say that the 4 year manufacturers warranty speaks volumes for them however, and the one that I have is VERY well built and silent in operation.

In my opinion Eheims are overrated. They used to be the absolute best back when the professional range first game out, their newer filter though just seem gimicky to me.

As to tetra tec, I am reserving my judgement until more folks have hade these running for longer.

Fluvals are ok, but again overrated. The one I have feels very cheaply built (205), and the corrugated pipes are yet another gimick.

The one filter I would avoid like the plague these days is any of the Sicce Genio range, I had a Genio 1 and a Genio 2 and they were both undersized and didn't last 5 minutes.

I bought mine through 1st 4 aquatics, cheaper than eaby at the time, for about £70 delivered.

My opinion of Eheim are similar to Wolfenrook's TBH. I'm being less pushy about them though, as there is a lot of support for Eheim on here and expressing these opinions openly often results in a slanging match between myself and other more vocal members...... :shifty:

Personally for larger tanks i like two independant filters, especially with 'dirty' fish, as it gives good flexibility when one needs cleaning the other keeps running, and no noticeable difference in water quality.
I would suggest 2 smaller tetratecs - ive had them running for over a yr with no problems at all, cleaning one out every two months or so.

i you want cheap use ebay thats what its for after all

Bought my eheim pro off ebay :good:

If going 2nd hand then try to see it working and check that the impeller isn't damaged.
