WHAT EVENT GOT YOU HOOKED ON FISH KEEPING ?

Me, it all started with my brother moving house, he gave me a small tank (12" x 6" x 6") and so i went to a pets store and bought some coldwater fish (my favorite cold water fish *Golden rudd*) It soon developed that i got his other small tank (same size as the other) with to alantic goldfish and a catfish that i never found out what it was, and i loved the way the catfish used to suck its way up my finger when i was feeding them, in time my golden rudd died of old age, even when i moved them to a larger tank, and the catfish somehow managed to get out of its tank and dried up on my bedroom carpet, and the two goldfish returned to my brother because i wanted them out of the way and are still alive to this day, and i had a empty tank or two, and then my mother gave me a heater, because my brother was going to go tropical but didnt have a tank to start tropical, so she gave it to me, i read up and got it cycled and then i bugged her right left and center to go to a pets store, and we bought 6 blue tetra neons, 4 black tetra neons and a chinese algae eater, i came home and we were off, me a newbe to tropical fish keeping, then a week later we stepped up a little and she bought me a female swordtail and a male, the male died but at this time i did not know the female was preggy, i was over the MOON when i saw two little fry in the bottom of my tank, they grew up, now i was running low on space so i stepped up the tank, and soon the two little fry (Nemo and bubbles) where two strapping swordies and i went out and bought another female and male, i am now still running off these swordies and they are keeping me weel stocked with swordtails, though i have lost my fair amount, i have gained alot, now i am on the more standard stages of tropical fish keeping, and so am pleased when i see my fish happy, and i am always after the next phrase of a bigger tank, to give my fish that extra room, however also to get those other fish that i cant get yet, in so to create a good colourful community to be my pride and joy, that i can show off and get those Oooo's and ahhhh's

;)

My dad got me my firsts tank when I was 6 :D

The fish were a few fancy goldfish and some cories -_-

That was almost 8 years ago :)

I have always had my own tanks (1or 2) , but last year MTS struck and now I have 9 tanks and one is being set up  Next week I'll have ten :p

EDIT:Tank is being insta cycled right now  I'll put some of my invincible feeder guppies in to keep it cycled until I move my main fish in :)

WHAT EVENT GOT YOU HOOKED ON FISH KEEPING ? Getting a fish tank from my best friend when I was 10.

WHAT FISH WAS IT? I didnt actually get hooked till I was 12 and got 2 blue gouramis. They lived FOUR years and I was hooked from that point on. They had presonality, the female died before the male and he was greiving. He didnt swim around the tank anymore, just kinda sat there. He ended up dying 2 weeks later curled up in a shell I had in the tank. It was so heartbreaking and I vowed to never be without fish from that point on.

HOW LONG AGO WAS IT? 6 years ago.

HAVE YOU HAD ANY LAPSES WITHOUT FISH AND HOW LONG? Only when my tank was cycling between batches of fishes. So like barely a week.

When I was about 7 I got a goldfish bowl with 2 goldfish in it... of course, they died after about 3 months due to the lack of filtration etc..... But i always had an interest in the sea and in fish.

The thought of getting a fish tank again crossed my mind after visiting my sister's boyfriend's flat and seeing his pathetic tropical tank (neons etc) and thinking... i could do that, and better...

And not quite 2 years down the line i am absolutely hooked and am now working in my favourite local fish shop! Its a dream come true getting to work with so many amazing species of fish in a fairly large shop with such nice people!

Ummm no particular even got me going..

Goldfish have such neat [personalities...I love how they follow me around the room day in and day out. lol

Got my first tank when I was 12. A little 10 gallon thats all. It had 5 comets in it and they lived for some 8 years. For my 18th B-day I got my 30 gallon and moved my goldfish into it. Then 6 months later I moved to Flagstaff, Arizona from Mesa so I could go to college (some of you know of my college days postings lol when I had some 12 Betas in my dorm room.) Well the goldfish finally died not long after I moved...too much stress on them.

Now I have them again and have had them for about 5 months now. :D

I got into fish keeping because i went into my local pet store to buy dogfood and crossed the fish section, it sucked me in and soon enough i said "I want one of those" Now i have a 2.5 gallon, 10 gallon, two 20 gallons, and a 29 on the way. :D :shifty:

It all started with a male Betta that I named Yong Fu. He lived 5 years. I've been keeping fish ever since.

What event got you hooked on fishkeeping?
Seeing my uncles huuuuuuuuuuuuuge tank when I was a nipper. Ever since then I have wanted fish. I loved playing with the algae magnet (poor fish). Mind you thinking about it I never remember seeing fish in there

What fish was it?
Well it's wasnt strictly a particular fish that left me wanting more. See above

How long ago was it?
Well it was about 20 years ago that I laid eyes on my uncles tank. I kept numerous goldfish when I was younger but got into keeping tropical fish for myself when I came into some ineritance money just over a year ago.

Have you had any lapses without fish?
Not since I set up my tropical tank.

My parents had tanks when I was little little. I started with reptiles and Cichlids when I was about 8.

I had tanks with no more than a few weeks lapses until I was 22

For the next 4 years I moved between several states and it simply wasn't possible to maintain fish (my parents inherited all my aquariums and supplies.

At 26 I got Sam, my Betta...

A year or so ago I settled into a city and committed to staying... so I started re-building my collection...

Now I'm 30 (Don't say it!) and... I'm hooked again...

Yes... Fish Keeping is a disease, not a hobby.....

PS - the 550 Gal pond will be done tonight, requires 5-7 days for the silicone to completely cure, to be filled next Saturday. After a 4 day leak test (sitting idle to ensure no leaks) I will add substrate and décor and begin cycling.

Ooooppss... I forgot to mention... Oscars were the ones that got me. From 8-22 I always had at least one Oscar... and when I started again more recently it was with Oscars... and the indoor pond will be stocked with 12 Oscars as it's primary inhabitants.

I got hooked when I was little...say maybe 7 yrs old. I always loved animals and wanted a pet...something besides our yarddog. My mom is NOT an animal person so an inside pet was out of the question and she suggested fish. I got a bowl and a goldfish and one of those little booklets "How To Take Care Of Fish". I read it over and over and when I had memorized it I read it again. I wore it out. Then I got my parents to buy me the "manuals" and then the real books. I began to keep goldfish and tropical fish but they were always in bowls.

Then my aunt (another major animal lover) called my dad one day and she told him to come pick up one of her old ten gallon set ups for me. It had an aqua clear power filter, tank, cover, even gravel and plants. She talked to me about how to set it up and take care of it, etc. I will never forget the feeling it gave me. I was HOOKED!

I have ALWAYS had some kind of fish ever since!

I got "hooked" when I was about 13. My grandfater always had, and still has tons of fish and tanks. When I was about 13 he gave me a 35 gallon tank and set it up for me, and bought me my first fish. Ever since then I have been into fish keeping. I am now 20, and I sitll have that same 35 gallon setup (along with 4 more tanks). I make sure the 35 gallon tank is always perfect and looking good for when he drops in for a visit. Funny thing is, I am now 20, and he is putting preassure on me to setup a salt water tank and if I don't soon I'm sure he'll be over setting it up himself.

I am so glad that growing up around his tanks motivated me to get into this hobby, I LOVE it.

My boyfriend at the time who is now my hubby got me hooked with his red devil and angel. (in seperate tanks of course) I realized that fish all had their own personalities. Big red could recognize us and tell the diff between us ane other people. I could also play with him. We used to play eat the finger and kill the gravel vac.LOL I could also feed him and angel from my hand just like any other pet. Big red has since passed away but angel is still with us today and we now have a third tank. I am sooo hooked on fishkeeping. I love that I am responsible for keeping not just the fish but the balance of their whole environment.
