Hi guys

Story is I'd like to get my sister something extra for her current 10 gallon tank (for Xmas) which houses one gold fish (the other died last year). She's had this one gold fish for a good 6/7 years, and id like to maybe get another addition to her tank. Something small!
She just has the tank with a hiding cave and one plant, gravel substrate.
She has no filter and no heater.
A friend of mine has a 12 gallon tank with 2 small goldfish (can't remember which type, possibly mollys) a very small bottom feeder and a clam? BUT he has a filter. (No heater)
Would a clam in my sisters tank be ok? Or is there anything else I could get to add?
Any ideas advice would be welcome thank you.

IMO the answer to your question is you should not add any other fish to the tank, 1 goldfish is more than enough for a 10 gallon tank.

I would get her a filter, rather than something living.

and if I were to give her my old 20 gallon tank and put the goldfish in there what could I add then....?

I would still only keep one fish, even if they are fancy goldfish they still need quite a bit of swimming space and produce lots of waste.

Ok, understand your point!
So just to clear something up, what else can you put into a goldfish tank with no heater/filter?

Not regarding the size of the tank?

Honestly? Not a lot.

Compatible fish, temperature wise, would be white cloud mountain minnows and weather loach, but in terms of temperament, they're not. Large goldies eat white clouds, and white clouds stress out goldies (especially fancies) with their rapid swimming. Weather loach are easily stressed out by the goldies, and often refuse to come out to feed.

Goldfish are far, far better off in a species only set up. And all fish should have a filter.

I'd leave goldfish as goldfish. I'm not sure but clams might be saltwater, in which case it would be a big no-no.  My advice is to add nothing but goldfish--and make sure you don't put more than 5" of fish in a 10 gallon tank.  The best Christmas present you could probably give your sister is a bigger tank!
