i think he means what do they do, as in a carbon filter pad.

as far as i know carbon is used in a tank to detox the water, so any meds that you want rid of you would use carbon. Poly i would guess at great at cleaning the water since i would guess it would catch all the small bits floating around

The polyester fibers also provide a place to bacteria to grow, which will remove ammonia and nitrites from the water.

Black carbon is used to remove chemicals and meds from the water.
Only ever need to have carbon in stock after you have finished around of meds, then the carbon is placed in the filter to remove it.

Carbon is great for removing things from the water. But, you only need to use if you are trying to do that. Most of the time, you don't have to run it in your filter. I never use it in mine, so I have plenty to spare if I need it later.

The polyester the filter part you need to clean every once in awhile. I give mine a good rinse in old tank water after doing t a water change. Then...I put the same filter pad back in, since it will still have good bacteria in it.
