ok i have decided on what fish i would like to keep in my freshwater 55 gallon tank. i am no expert and have been doing the whole fish for only about a year now and i was wondering what you guys think of this combination of fish in that tank. i need your advice so i do not harm the fish or do some thing wrong so please tell me if this combination of fish is not good and give me some suggestions on what fish might work if you can. these are the fish i plan on having in my 55 gallon tank:

-2 angles
-2 cichlids
-1 small eel(possibly a peacock or fire?)
-1 balck ghost knifefish

tell me if this will not work or if it too many fish, i am open for suggestions.

:)

No BalckKnife they get to large and it depends on the cichlids if you can keep the angels, as for the eels, Im not sure.

i was thinking mostly Malawian Cichlids like a Electric Yellow Cichlid or a Yellow Peacock Cichlid maybe a Tanganyikan Cichlids no new worlds i think.

are the Tanganyikan Cichlids ok? also i want to have angels and an eel deffinetly does anyone know any good fish that will go with these fish in a 55 gallon?

Lol not fire eel or ur fish will be disppearing very very fast. And the black ghost knife going to out grow ur tank in no time.

It's not too many fish, depending on the Cichlids that you're planning to get. As for the eel, stick with Peacock; they only grow to about 12". But IIRC, both are nocturnal. You can train them to eat during the day, but it may be difficult. I guess your choice of Cichilds will make or break this setup. Since Angels are Cichlids, you can just get more angels. Discus and Severum are very peaceful, but they are fairly large. You can keep 2 of them in 55 g without a problem, but with all other inhabitants, it would be pushing the filtration system to its limits. Other option would be get 2 or 3 dwarf Cichlids. Most other Cichlids tend to get really territorial and aggressive. You might also want to consider a school of surface dwelling fish like the Hatchet fish. School of Corys for the bottom are also good choice. So my choice would be:
-2 Angels
-1 Peacock Eel
-1 Ghost Knifefish
AND
-6 Marble Hatchetfish
-2 Dwarf Cichlids
OR
-6 Corys

I prefer the Hatchetfish/Dwarf Cichlid route, since you can "spread out" the inhabitatants and make them feel less crowded.

If you tried to keep dwarf cichlids and hatchets with the angels and eel you'd have trouble. The angels would harass the hatchets and the eel would eat anything small. The ghost knife would also eventualy be large enough to eat anything small in the tank.

I suggest you choose a fish you like and centre the setup around it. If you decide to go for angels, get 6. You can't sex young angels so this is the only way to get a pair. Let them grow and pair off. Once you have an obvious pair, you can return the rest to your LFS. With the angels I'd keep a large school of scissortail rasboras, a trio of moonlight gouramies and a medium-sized school of cories or some other catfish.

If you want to go with african cichlids - malawian mbuna in particular - a 55 gallon may prove ideal. I'd check the African section and would suggest yellow labs, pseudotropheus acei, p. socolofi, p. saulosi and iodotropheus sprengerae as good fish to begin your research with.

If you'd rather go for an ell/knife oddball tank, ask in the oddball section for suggestions on what would work.

i was wondering why would i buy 6 angles if i only need two and then just return 4? i dont really want them to breed. also what does mbuna mean

cani just buy 2 or do i have to buy 6 and then return 4? could i put discus in with eels and BGK and angels???
