What Do You Think Of This Fella?

lol Mel what can i say. He is a beaut mind i love the yellows  , if you spawn a HM female with him at some point count me in  as for having them all, well....i'm trying lol i dare not say how many little fellas i have now

I am worried about him you know.
I don't know the name of it, but the red gill bit you see when they flare? It's out constantly. Does anyone have any advice about this? He seems peaceful now he's here. The shop said he flares constantly and he was flaring the entire 25 minutes I was watching him. He has calmed right down now, but those red gill bits are on show the whole time and I'm concerned.

Do you mean like in the first pic you posted, if so i have a male thats like that its just the way he is. However don't hold me to that

Yep exactly like that, how long you had your male? I hope it's not an illness or anything, though I doubt the shop would have the nerve to sell him for that price if he was sick.

about 5 months now. I don't think its an illness i have even spawned him and he brought off a good brood i think its jush how some are. But if he is sick boy would i be p@#!ed. He is a cutie though

he's a funny fish
He likes to eat when nobody's looking, so I hid and watched him, it takes him about 8 goes to actually catch the pellet in his mouth, he misses and misses and misses but he's right under it. It's so weird. Do you think inbred fish are like inbred people - not quite the ticket and causes of possible mental illness?

 I'm not laughing at mental illnesses, before anyone shoots me down. I'm laughing because Mel has the most random thoughts on here!

As for the question, not sure. You can inbreed for a few generations before getting deformities and such, mentally - I don't know.

I think mental illness (edit: deformities along with mental illness) occurs in inbreeding fishes, but only the fit will be able to make it out of the first few stages of life, such as learning to free swim, getting food.

Not sure if it helps but heres a pic of big red when i got him. The "gill bit" is sticking out, its not quite as obviouse here but as i said berfore he is still ok and still just the same

You're pic is so fab!!! Yes it's like that, but Kai's are dark red, maybe they show up more because he's so pale?

lol thank you, the trick is to take hundreds and pic the best, god bless digi cam. It is most likely coz he is pale and his "flaps" are not as you say it stands out. Wish i had a better pic to show as Reds really stand out too. Looking at the other gill thread i'm sure he hasn't got the same thing as his cheek isn't sticking out. Hows your other little CT doing?

I think if Kai wasn't so shy in other ways I might not worry so much about him, but he's definitely perked up since he went into the bigger bowl.

So, Rufus is great! He came to me with so much attitude I almost regretted getting him, having a serial flarer for your 2nd betta is a scary experience! But he's ace now, has loads of personality and is very sweet! Watches me all the time, but loves his surroundings and has grown even since I got him, he's a beauty! I'll get some pics tomorrow
