i agree they are but i already them in my community, what about silver dollars??would that work :D

How many gallons is that? Around 45? If you're looking for something other than a community tank and want something impressive, try african cichlids - research malawians if you want lots of color. I suggest you begin with yellow labs and look for cichlids that are compatible with them. Some good species to consider seem to be pseudotropheus acei, iodotropheus sprengerae, pseudotropheus socolofi and pseudotropheus saulosi. Also consider a bristlenose plec and/or some medium-sized synodontis catfish species to go with them.

If you want, you could also go for a discus tank or angels and of course there are tiger barbs if you want a frenzied species tank... Well there are many, many species that would do best in a species tank. Maybe look into some kind of oddball?

Or maybe get a single CAE and see how big you can get it to grow :p

What exactly would you like? What are you after? Do you have anything in mind?

As for what I would do... pearl gourami grow-out tank :p (and then I'd go for a tank filled with FFs, FSAEs, SAEs and otos - just to confuse people).

hi
dont mean to sound stupid but what a cae, would rams and 1 oscar be compatible,

Too small for an oscar. How big do upside down catfish grow? I know bugger all about them but they are so cute in their upside-down-iness.

I agree that a 45G is too small for an oscar, smallest you can start with is around 55 if you ask me, and thats pushing it.

A CAE = Chinese Algae Eater. Hated by most people because they buy them as an algae eater and then find out that they get aggresive (not always!) when ageing. For this reason, you cant really put them in with any other fish, or well, not safely. They're absolutely lovely fish to watch though! Very active and look gorgeous if you ask me. They also get quite large at around 11" I believe, not certain about the length though :)

--Edit--

Oops, forgot to say what I'd do :p
I'd say, try and make it a species only tank with puffers. It will probably prove to be quite a challange, seeing as puffers arent the easiest fish to keep, but it will definatly be worth it! If you'd go for this you could either go with 2 or 3 slightly larger puffers (South Americans for example) or go with a nice number of dwarf puffers (about 8 in a tank that size) You will however need Loads of plants and hiding places, live or frozen food and snails. If you'll go for this I think its best to research a lot and ask your questions in the oddball section. Good luck making a choice!

higreat idea i never thought of puffers ;) ;)
i think i will try a few puffer fish,i say one im my lfs called a mbu puffer or something like that, are they ok to keep alone or do you need a couple??

Don't mbu puffers grow real big? Maybe a few GSP's or Fig 8's... I know you can fit a nice herd of dwarf puffers in there, and they're FW so that's something to think about... They'd go nicely with a planted tank too

upside-down cats get 4-6 inches. they totally rock! so funny :fun:

chinese algea eaters get 8 inches roughly. again, lovely fish to watch, as Erised said.

if i were you, i'd get 4-6 zebra plecos and breed em. make tons of money and theyre gorgeous!! Or, you could do brackish and get some South American Dragon Fish! and then add some swordies, or whatever else that strikes your brackish fancy... mmmm. i also like the puffer idea. theyre so cute! :p

MBUs will outgrow your tank big time, sorry.
When going for puffers you'll be limited to what you can get, most puffers will outgrow your tank. For this reason you'll have to do proper research first. I still think that, especially for a beginner in puffers, dwarfs will be your best bet

Also, thanks about the length correction Sky, I really wasnt sure anymore :)
