i found my first dead fish earlier my oldest guppy male he was on the bottom but still had all his colour what do i do with him flush down the toilet or bury him ???

what do you do.

I am of the opinion that once something is dead, the essence that made it an individual has gone (where-ever) and all that is left is a shell. Dead meat.

I therefore have no problem in wrapping the corpse in a tissue and dumping it in the bin.
The same goes for when I die, although I can't be bunged in a dumpster so I'll be buried in a cardboard coffin with a tree planted over me and no ceremony.

I don't flush in case it died of something nasty which then gets into the local ecosystem.

I wrap the fish in tissue paper and put it in a little box or something. Then I bury it under a bush or tree in the backyard and put a little flower there.

I know, I'm too sentimental, but I wouldn't do any less for my dog so it's the same for my fish.

I know my lfs freeze them, and a company comes to collect them to be crimated - it is illegal for lfss (in the UK) to dispose of ANY dead animals in any other way...apparently. Just as it is on farms nowadays. Gone have the days when you could dig a hole to bury a dead sheep. You now have to pay a company to pick the corpse up and take it away to be "disposed of legally"...

I wrap mine up and put them in the dustbin.

Pysgodyn, I know someone that has an old cow, that they want to shoot and bury on the farm, but they can't they said they would have to take her to markect wait for anothe cows to fill the lorry and then driven to way up north, near nottingham, to then be killed and desposed of.

I hvae to say not something I'd like to go through when I old and about to die.

yep we put all dead fish in the freezer. although the new manager hasn't quite grasped the idea that fish in bin liners for a few days in cuboard bloody stink!!

really gets on my nerves. he really doesn't understand much about fish keeping either really thats a whole new can of worms though!

i cook em up and eat em, little lemon juice and some salt and theyre good to go.

Hi All

Interesting thought Utahfish - how about a neon tetra tansy :fun:

We eat whitebait. Gudgeon (a river fish) used to be eaten as a tansy, and not lets forget the humble sardine (lovely on toast).

Even though I am experienced at filleting fish (being a sea angler) even I think I`d have problems filleting a neon though and by the time I`d got enough for a feed I`d be past the stage of being hungry (or I`d have gone to the fridge for something else. :D

Yep, have to agree with you there. You're meant to like people for their personality, not their looks :) Although I flush mine, if I put them in the bin the cats would get it out and eat it. Not good.

I may be wrong :dunno: but as many diseases (if they die from that) are fish specific I have no qualms, unless it was a very special fish putting it out the window for the local birdlife (or catlife  ) to partake of. If it was a special fish (1 so far) it gets wrapped in a nice newspaper coffin then out into the big wheelie bin.
