What Do Veggie Plecos Eat

I leave all veg for most the day and the whole night and then take it out in the morning.. or if they're still eating it I leave it in. I have never had a problem with veg rotting.

As for the protein I haven't directly fed any but as my plec is in with my ADFs and I feed them bloodworm and tubifex the option is always open for him.

He just doesn't eat anything! Well hopefully he's getting enough to eat from the bogwood :/

Hi, I tried to feed Pleco Courgette for first time yesterday> cost about 80p from local Farm Shop.

I boiled a slice of it first to make it sink to bottom.....but the Plec got close to it and then ignored it!
The Clown Loaches went for it and we heard the 'clinck-clunck' noise for ages as they took chunks off.

I was hoping the Plec would love it and I'm now not sure if to put any more in?? (Didn't touch Cucumber either)

He may be too used to the Algae Wafers, but hope he eventually gets taste for actual Veg.

>Mine also eats bits of Frozen bloodworm and competes for flakes at times, so he ain't starving!

I may try Peas or Lettuce next. Any recommendations?

i would avoid boiling it, that often does no more than make it rot quicker, lol it also removes most of the nutritional value of the food. just weigh it down with lead of some other weight. you might try tomato, de-seeded but not skinned and not cooked in any way. it stayed in the tank two days before it vanished skin and all. fresh, frozen peas, skinned but uncooked. celery leafs weighed down but uncooked. fresh roast chicken. i did read recently an item relating to feeding plecos. it was postulated that common plecos could survive with no food except bog wood. but on looking into it it seemed that the pleco was getting enough nutrition from the algae and detritus in the tank, only needing to add fibre, in the form of bog wood, to help it all through. so it is quite possible that your pleco is getting enough without you needing to add to its food.

Whoever postulated that then has no idea whatsoever.

Agreed, i think boboboy reads the alternative guide to plecokeeping by A. N. Other.

I never left veg in for longer than 24 hours, 12 hours was the normal maximum, it had usually been demolished by then anyway.

Courgette is generally accepted to be better overall than cucumber as well, persevere with it, leave it near his territory just before lights out and it will soon get the hang of it.

it came from a thread you and i were involved in some time ago, a link someone put up i believe. and it was indeed faulty, the pleco got its nutritional requirements from algae and general detritus, but was only ever seen eating wood. and indeed was fed nothing else, if i remember correctly.

nothing wrong with being safe, but these things can safely be left in for far longer with no ill effect to a well kept tank. and i agree it is finished before that more often than not.

Does my pleco look ok?? I think he's too skinny but just want to know how bad he is? He's normally quite striking black and white but he didn't like me removing his bogwood to take pics so he's brown in the pics

Tummy pic...

And plec with dwarf frog, they seem to have become good friends!

So what do you all recon? Should I be worried about his eating?
